Slavery was on it's way out in most developed countries even before the Civil War started. The value of the slaves in the south far exceeded the value of the land. It was deeply engrained in their economy. Which is why they were willing to go to war for it. And look at our history. Even with slavery abolished, people of color were still treated like shit for the 100 years that followed.
