Their "solution" to letting the obvious companions doing it for you was like a petulant child.

It really is atrocious writing. And they have you just survive anyways so you can play the DLC

What's hilarious is they easily could have solved that problem by simply not giving him dialogue options or having him be busy with something else at that point.

The fact that he explicitly has an answer means they recognized how stupid it was, and they made it even dumber

The dlc changed it so they can do it, still funny though that they needed that crappy ending in vanilla.

The original ending guaranteed replay value for casuals and fits of blinding rage for completionists. We will never be ready for that level of genius in a western RPG

Do you always have Fawkes with you at the end? I vaguely recall being alone when I did the ending, but then, I havent played it since release.

The game all but hands him to you. If you have good (or anything but evil possibly) karma he's standing outside Raven Rock drawing attention to himself firing a gatling laser at the end of a mandatory escape sequence. A lot of people either had Fawkes first time or on the 2nd run where they didn't nuke Megaton.

If you had a guide or knowledgeable friend, you'd simply know to avoid the ending anyway

Charon's been an unwaveringly obedient lackey for an evil bartender for who knows how many years, fought a hundred deathclaws and taken a thousand stings from albino radscorpions without a single grumble of complaint while tagging along with the Vault Dweller, but pressing a few buttons in a chamber that can kill the Vault Dweller (but not him) is where he draws the line at.

Like you can tell they had this sacrifice ending all planned out but at some point someone said "Uhh aren't several of the companions immune to radiation?" and they had to scramble and think of something.

The DLC did change it, but IIRC they didn't get Ron Perlman to record a new ending so he still talks about the heroic sacrifice of the Lone Wanderer.

Even more insulting is that Fawkes literally does this exact thing when you recruit him (her?) in the Vault; walking through a chamber of radiation to get the GECK or whatever.

Which is why they should have included a simple sequence before this moment that prevents companions from following you. Maybe they die. Maybe they are distracting some big enemy or group of enemies. Forcing the Lone Wanderer to do it. Convoluted? Yeah. but anything would be better then this.

That was pretty ridiculous, even with the rest of the game's morality being all black and white. Glad I got the game long after all the DLC was released. I only remember fully finishing the game once, and sent Charon in there. He didn't really want to, but complied (as he totally should, both because he's more resistant to radiation and because of his contract).

The ending to Rage was pretty bad. You flip a switch and the game ends. You did the thing, whoohoo.

The devs were probably being petty after seeing everyone call them out on it. "Alright. FINE! You can do it. But everyone will be insulted you sent someone else in instead of risking your own ass BECAUSE FUCK YOU FOR USING LOGIC!"

What's hilarious to me is that it's so obvious they should have done this instead. If they were that insistent of you making a sacrifice. The fact that they not only let the companion come with you, but even coded ridiculous excuses, just blows my mind.
