The things we already know to be objective fact, like Trump literally watching it on TV and refusing to call the national guard while numerous Republican senators, congressman, and Fox News anchors called and texted his chief of staff to get him to call off the riots, are unbelievable

This.

They clearly participated in getting it running, so they want to whitewash it as much as possible to avoid just punishment.

weird isn't really the right word, because that implies we don't understand the behavior

we understand the behavior: they're acting like it was nothing because they'll do it again the first chance they get

what's weird is the lack of consequences

is it really weird that the party known for gasslighting its own members into believing in a distorted version of reality would do that with the terrorist actions their party leader instigated a year ago? the GOP has used fear as a political tool for decades, but it wouldn't work if its members started fearing its more radical elements, so they push the same misinformation bullshit that you see dictators the world over doing.

There's so much extremism in the modern world that the event is not something that bothers me. It's more of a "huh" kind of thing.

All things considered, security staffing did a horrible job and it's funny to see how poorly defended the capitol building were. It makes you think, they probably never put in much security because they thought no one would ever try

I feel like the storming of the capitol undermines the other completely bonkers things surrounding it - like that Trump was threatening his own Vice President to override Congress and declare that he won.

The security could have held long enough for the national guard to arrive if the following happened. Their gear NOT getting locked up. Higher ups cooridinating a response. They got the news ahead of time something might happen, but no reinforcements were called beforehand cause Trump didnt want them to. The National Guard was delayed for hours.

Ron DeSantis's COVID gaslighting is the most blatantly egregious I've ever seen.

Dude literally boasts about cases going down by 90% after they went up 5,000%. Then he blames the federal government for not having enough monoclonal antibodies, which don't work against Omicron anyway, instead of his Great Barrington declaration let it rip BS.

poorly defended by design, the FBI put out warnings suggesting something big would happen but the executive branch intentionally gimped the response to better the odds of their coup.

There were no odds. Even if those morons had disrupted the Senate vote, at that point it was almost purely symbolic. If this was a coup attempt, it was engineered by morons, organized by morons, and performed by morons.

Which frankly doesn't surprise me much coming from the Four Seasons Total Landscaping Kraken President.

if one of those terrorists had the chance and actually shot a senator you'd have seen pandemonium, pandemonium trump would have jumped on to declare martial law. hard to say what would have happened in that chaos, but its not beyond the possibility that trump would have had some of his more psychotic supporters in the government and military carry out some clandestine arrests/executions...

After he refused to go along with overturning the election results Pence came very close to being hurt in the riots himself

I don't like the man but I give him props for how he handled that whole situation. Unlike Trump he went down with dignity and grace

He doesn't have the authority to declare martial law. It requires approval. This was discussed in great detail before January 6th, specifically because his supporters recommended it all the time online. Because they're idiots.

According to Dan Quayle, Pence literally asked (Quayle) if there was any way he could actually send the votes back to the state legislatures.

TC we went to war with two nations because some assholes plowed planes into a couple buildings, chaotic events build their own momentum and tend to help those at the head of it ignore rules and laws. had a couple senators died that day there'd be enough chaos for him to try it, and there were/are enough hard line supporters in the government and the military that it would have been a big issue irregardless of the legality of it.

We may never know the full details, but we know for sure that the department of defense had a plan in place to not follow any orders given by Trump. This was confirmed both by the Secretary of Defense and Nancy Pelosi.

Apparently behind the scenes he was considered to be a potential national security threat and was treated like one

weird? no. disturbing and concerning? yes. it makes perfect sense given who is doing it. look at what those people aim to achieve. they're fascists who only care about self enrichment. they're testing the waters to see how far they can push this narrative without losing the Republican base while also normalizing this "speculative questioning" about our electoral process. it's all setup to cast doubt on future elections every time they lose.

Dunno seems like a lot of fence sitting to me. The military said they took steps to not obey Trump, but at the same time did very little to actually try to stop Trump. I mean they all could have tried something to get the National Guard out faster or have reinforcements ready with all the information the FBI knew beforehand something was going to happen.
