So I'm using painkillers to get through the pain of post surgery and in my topic about my surgery some users advised me to wean off the pain killers as soon as possible.

First day after surgery I had very little pain, but i just followed the scheduled pain killer plan anyways. In the evening i started feeling some pain, so i took a paracetamol and went to bed.

Second day is today and i woke up in pain and needed to take one of the pills that can be used to handle the break through pain in between the pills that should only be taken two times a day.

I wonder how it feels to be addicted to pain killers. Do you just feel pain and you feel you need the pills to get rid of it?

None of the pills I have makes me feel any kind of buzz, but I want to make sure I don't get some addiction or anything, without even knowing it.

So it's actually the need to get rid of the pain that is the addiction? That sounds awful!

I always imagined that pain killers gave you some kind of good feeling, not just the lack of bad feelings.

I can understand how it's easy to get addicted to if it's something that you don't chase to get some buzz.

I'll be careful!

Can you expand on this? I'm new to pain killers, so I'm interested in knowing what causes the addiction, since there is no buzz involved (as far as i can feel, at least)

I'd rather not. I'm super addicted to them and don't really want to say much about it. No offense

I will say that if you start thinking you're addicted, get off of them immediately. It's a road you don't want to go down

This is why I want to know more. I'm still early in using them and it's just two days since the surgery. I haven't used more than the scheduled plan from the hospital, but what has made me worry a little is that the pain has increased from yesterday to day.

I will call the hospital if i feel i need to exceed the plan, but at the moment i only use 1 pill whenever the schedule says 1-2 pills, so I'm thinking about staying on the safe side and just deal with the extra pain

Opioids did nothing for me but night sweats and absurdly violent dreams. Plain old ibuprofen killed the pain better.

Ended up with 130 vicodins over the course of an abscessed canine tooth that inflated my whole head into a basketball. Maybe took seven before I gave up on it.

Basically, if you're unable to function even enough to handle a glass of water and eating a small meal from the pain, feel free to use the surgery grade stuff. But if you think you could manage with ibuprofen, go ahead and try. Basically I ended up being able to sleep with them to keep the pain down but could manage during the day with ibuprofen, and then after another day or two just swapped entirely to ibuprofen and then called it good during the daytime, opting to use an ice pack or whatever and being sure to hydrate.

Just because they give you enough that you can take them twice a day for a week doesn't mean you need to stay on them that long.

Those are excellent points, but it's the lack of feeling some kind of high that made me wonder how it's easy to get addicted.

As you can see on the post above i don't exceed the plan from the hospital, so I don't think it will be a problem. I just want to know about the pitfalls. I too struggled with alcohol and wish i was more aware during the time i was just partying in my youth

It kind of scares me how much I like opioids. So I'm very cautious when I've needed to take them

How do you like them? Like... Do they make you feel good, or does it just remove pain?

I'm told not to use too much ibuprofen, but that it should be taken alongside the other painkillers.

It looks like my plan says twice a day for three days, then once a day for the rest of the week

Were they strong painkillers? I don't feel any high from my pills, which is probably good!

Ibuprofen is going to mess with your blood pressure, but that's about it. It's fairly harmless for a painkiller, unless your heart or kidneys are already a mess.

If you want to beat back the deep pains, there's always ethanol, but that's the path to the dark side that nobody wants.

Can't remember. But one time for after wisdom teeth and dry socket. Another time when I had a bad abscess in my throat. Awful pain both times. So probably fairly strong

You won't be happy - you won't be sad.
You will be blank.
With any luck, that blankness will turn you off.
You will want to feel life again, in all of its uglyness.

We all have good and bad days, that's normal.
But living in a state of blankness is not.

You're not taking the kind of painkillers other people refer to when they say painkillers. They're talking about opioids. You're taking generic Tylenol. It's just for pain and doesn't give a high.

I never managed to get high off of opioids. All they did was make me sweat and hear a high pitched warble.

No idea why. We cleaned out my grandma's apartment after she died, and found literally a thousand vicodins and oxycontins stashed everywhere. She was was the only there - who was she hiding them from?

I use these three, in combination with paracetamol (which is kinda the same as ibuprofen)

Celecoxib 200mg 8am and 8pm
Palexia 50mg 8am and 8pm
Oxydone 5mg to get rid of throbbing pain, but needs to be spaced out with at leadt 4 hours (plan says 1-2 pills, i have only used 1 at a time)

Using them the way they're prescribed almost never leads to addiction from what I've read. Trust your doctor and do what they said unless something weird starts happening like allergies

Oxycodone is the opioid

Paracetamol is tylenol/acetaminophen. Ibpropfen is a completely different metabolic pathway.
