It kinda seems like Boomers have a hard on about how important a life skill changing a tire is and how you can only be considered self-sufficient if you learn how to do it.

Leaving aside the fact that anyone with two brain folds to rub together can figure out how changing a tire works, has anyone ever even needed to do it?

No, just from blowouts and I have bad luck with nails or screws finding their way into my tires lol.

Yes,many times. It's important to know how to change a tire and make sure you have what you need to change it.

There is no excuse for not knowing how to do it.

I had a 35 mile commute for 8 years, it takes a toll.
Also I was a pizza delivery driver before that, had a blowout after my pizza was delivered and pulled onto the shoulder and did the needful - back to the shop covered in brake dust and dirt with the silly little donut spare on my silly little car

That requires foresight, at the time I was driving 2 hours a day and working 10 hours... When I was done with that I didn't remember to do much else other than eat and try to see my kids before they went asleep lel

Also, knowing how to change a tire is a moot point if it's -20F or there's a foot of snow or it's 110F and 85% humidity... Unless the weather is pleasant I'd like to never have to do that again

You are supposed to keep an eye on the treads and do routine rotations but sometimes they just blow out even with some tread left man. Also I used to do uber and light night/early mornings I'd get a lot of plant workers and construction workers and I caught a couple of nails dropping them off at their sites , also had one nail crossing a train track. Had a blowout doing a cross country drive to Vegas when passing through Texas. If you do a lot more driving than the average person you're going to have to change more tires than the average person too just by the numbers

A friends mom was telling me one time about a trip she did in the seventies from Colorado to NM. I guess it was the middle of summer and she was driving down there with re-treaded tires and the tread melted off. I didnt even know that was a thing that could happen.

I dont think she had a spare tire. Shes a boomer too so thats some bullshit right there.

I've seen a group of zoomers sit the car back on the ground before tightening the lugs on the spare, so yeah people can and will fuck it up.

I've changed tires out prob 5 times between my own car and helping someone else. Over 10 once you start counting farm equipment changes.

I once had about 8 or so flat tires in a single year. Most of it was due to rim corrosion and me being too much of a broke college student to get better rims (the car was old but was a gift). I had to change the tire multiple times. Got to the point I could probably have the spare tire on within 2 mins of start to finish after buying a hydraulic jack.

I've had to do it a grand total of two times in the 20+ years I've been driving. The hardest part is always getting the spare out. My last vehicle was a Ford Ranger with one of those little winch devices to lower the spare out from under the truck. Pain in the ass

For everything a Boomer can't do, there's something your generation cant do either. Thats just "age-ism", like racism but related to different ages. For example, lot's of people that know how to swap a tire most likely don't have a clue on how to swap a RAM card, how to use tik tok, perhaps even how to use a computer.

Before, the need to know how change a tire was pretty common. Heck if you didn't know how to fix your own car for ANY problem then you would be bullied. Today it doesn't matter if you know or not, boomers know they can call their insurance or just whip up a YouTube video on the spot and learn there. No biggie. Something an older generation might not think or know how to do making it a big deal to have the knowledge of changing a tire beforehand very critical.

TL;DR Differently generations value certain skills differently but they shit on each other to be coolz

I also bought a brand new car in late 2017. Took a trip to Atlanta with my gf. Got a nail in my tire at some point during the trip. Had to replace the whole damn tire because it was too close to the sidewall. Had less than 1000 miles on the car. My luck with tires isn't the best. Got another nail in a tire in less than 4000 miles on the car from parking at my gf's place. Had to put the spare on from that too.

Yes. It's also so easy that youtube can teach you and I wouldn't say it's important or even a skill. The hardest part is making sure you have the necessary tools in your car. It may have been important before the advent of cell phones. These days not so much

First time it happened someone pulled over to help while I was changing it after a blowout on the interstate in the dead of winter.

2nd time a pothole on the interstate dislodged the tire bead from the rim and had to change the tire by myself (had to have the rim reshaped).

I was passed out in the back of my car one night when my friend was driving and one of my tires blew out on the highway

I couldn't get the new tire on because the studs(or whatever they're called I forget) were completely stripped so AAA had to use some electric impact driver? to get 4 of the lug nuts on. then I drove it home very carefully and spent like $1000 or some shit getting all new studs on all 4 wheels.
