Floyd Mayweather proclaimed that he is the best boxer of all time after leaving the legendary Muhammad Ali out of his top five rankings.

The 44-year-old American superstar, who holds an undefeated record of 50-0, retired from boxing in 2017 after his super-fight with UFC star Conor McGregor.

Mayweather previously criticised Ali during an appearance on ESPNs SportsCenter and challenged how the Greatest could rank ahead of him as the best boxer.

Money also snubbed the former two-time WBC heavyweight champ from his top five rankings on ESPN, with Mayweather criticising Alis performances against Ken Norton.

Speaking to Fat Joe on Instagram Live, Mayweather said his new top three would include himself, Pernell Whitaker was second and Roberto Duran ranked third.

The former five-weight world champs choices included only one place for a heavyweight boxer, with boxing legend Larry Holmes getting the nod.

Mayweather told the American rapper: Were going to have to go, OK, well go Money Mayweather, we got to go Pernell Whitaker, imma go Roberto Duran -- man, you put me in a tight predicament.

As far as with the heavyweights, if we're going to go heavyweights, Im going to be honest, I've got to go Larry Holmes.

Fat Joe challenged Mayweather on his choice of Holmes and claimed the Easton Assassin was not better than the likes of Ali or Mike Tyson.

However, Mayweather stood firm on his choice and provided an in-depth breakdown on why he selected Holmes for the No 4 spot.

Larry Holmes beat everybody in his era, when Larry Holmes got beat by Mike Tyson, he got beat by a young, hungry champion and he came out of a years retirement and got beat by Tyson, he explained.

I've got to say Larry Holmes, he had the basic fundamentals, he had the jab and even right now he's still living a great life because he made smart investments.

So, he was good from the beginning of his career to the end of his career.

Mayweather rounded off his top five rankings with former two-time light welterweight champ Aaron Pryor.

The Hall of Famer explained: Aaron Pryor, the only reason why Aaron Pryor lost a fight was because of drugs, he lost only one fight because of drugs.

Mayweather blasted Alis famed rope-a-dope technique during an extraordinary rant, as well as calling out the boxing resume of legendary former boxer Rocky Marciano.

Tyson has pulled no punches towards Mayweather over his [Mayweather's] claim that he is better than Ali, with Iron Mike calling his fellow boxing legend very delusional.

I always question if the majority of his wins were actually legit or not. I watched a couple of his fights and it was literally him dodge/hugging most rounds. I know that in other sports you'd be flagged for no contact or failure to compete. I'm not saying he wasn't a great boxer, but I question how he would perform if that kind of thing was limited in boxing.

Problem is that he is playing by the rules. Boxing isnt an ass kicking contest, its a game of landing punches while avoiding punches, and knocking the opponent down while not getting knocked down.

It would be like a running back who consistently just ran for 4 yards every single play - never more, never less. It would be very boring to watch, but it would be effective, and ultimately win almost every game.

and I get that, I really do, but that's why I like watching MMA every now and again. A maximum of 5 rounds, and if your choosing to constantly run you lose the match. I don't mind if he's engaging the enemy ala Dempsey and dodging accordingly, but to me clenching is just nonsense and really should have a limit on it before you start to get points taken away from you.

true, but look at the boxers he faced. mcgregor isn't even a boxer, and i havent heard of any of them except manny. had he fought someone like prime tyson or prime foreman he would have lost. he's a good boxer, but he never really faced anyone that notable except for the ones i mentioned.

Not really fair since Tyson was a heavyweight. But Tyson was faster than any person that size should've been. And he's always talked up as being very offensive, but Tyson actually was a defensive/counter boxer, but had more strength than someone like Mayweather. It wouldn't be a fair fight for Mayweather because of the weight differential, though.

Tyson's boxing style was actually very old school / orthodox but with an unusual combination of speed and strength.

And a very large percentage of his fights were set up with complete nobodies who never had any chance of winning. He hasn't fought anyone that could actually pose a challenge to him in a very long time.

I wouldn't call peek-a-boo style orthodox. Tyson was taught to box ambidextrous with both hands up and both feet squared to the opponent with lots of lateral torso movement. It was good for Tyson because it fit his relatively short, powerful stature with its focus on closing in on taller opponents, quick combos and lunging hooks. When he ditched Kevin Rooney his fundamentals slipped and he lost to Buster Douglas.

This video explains his style well in a few minutes.

It's strange he puts Duran on his list to me. Maybe he was a fan of Duran's clinching? Even though its completely different than Floyd's. Duran's clinching opened up his offensive, he used his head to break guards and move hands out of the way nearly head butting.

Floyd's clinching was to tire out his opponent / keep himself out of danger. It was rarely used offensively. Lots of great clinchers in the past used it offensively. Foreman's clinching from his first run is art. Seemed like it was the 90s when that all changed and everyone starting clinching to stall. A few still do it well, like Ricky Hatton but most were like the Clinchko brothers.

Prime Tyson is like 4 weight classes above Mayweather that's not a fair comparison.

Honestly the movie looks like they forced him to fight worse than he actually can for the purposes of cinematics. I can't really imagine a scenario where he just smashes a whole wall full of windows realistically. He'd do something different after hitting just one.

The point I think he is trying to make is that like any great fighter, you can't just be expected to fight middle of the road guys your entire career. Mayweather fought a couple notable people but no one that was on the level of a Tyson or Holyfield. De La Hoya comes close, still isn't there.
