We had to have both of mine put down last year. Watching their health decline in the weeks before was also heartbreaking, my girl who I always compared to an antelope lost almost all function in her back legs. They were both coming up on 15 years

Sorry to hear that man, I am in the process of losing mine as well to cancer. I'm sure you gave your baby a great life

we're in the "pay a lot of money to veterinarians to maximize quality of their remaining few years" stage so we definitely focus on loving on them, and if that means other things get the back burner, ok, since the next stage is "say goodbye and probably never recover emotionally"

one beat cancer (chondrosarcoma that formed in her front elbow--she had to undergo a forelimb amputation, but is a year cancer free and feeling great; we were incredibly relieved to learn it was not osteosarcoma) followed by a Dr. House-style diagnosis of hypothyroidism and the other an extruded spinal disc that would have caused paralysis (underwent hemilaminectomy and is now permanent Mr. Glass) followed by a Dr. House-style diagnosis of addison's disease

both now get daily medication for the associated chronic conditions which we DO NOT MIX UP.

they are still happily doing one mile walks every day with us and play like they were years younger.

I do lay in bed sometimes staring at him and thinking about the day you just faced. And even the thought of it has a big impact on me emotionally. So, I'm sure I can't even imagine what you're going through.

Went through it last year. Dont even want another pet. If i dont get another i wont have to do it again.

Life is too short to deprive yourself of such joy again. There are many animals out there in need of a home. In need of love. Consider the wonderful memories you could make, not of the end that must come

I'm sorry for your loss, TC.

I lost one of mine over a year ago. She was a runner and she'd gotten out one night after we'd had family over. She'd gotten through a door and we chased her to the end of the driveway, and one car, one fucking car on a residential street, took her life. Because of the family being over, our dogs had to be put up for a few hours. It still breaks my heart to know that her last few hours on earth was shut up in a cage. I still think of her every day.

I lost mine in 2014. I still occasionally dream about her being on the verge of death.

i'm so sorry.

ELIAS animal health is working on immunotherapy treatments that have the potential to significantly improve outcomes, but osteosarcoma is still incredibly grim, and the treatment is very, very expensive outside of clinical trials.

i hope you do elect to provide yours with at least palliative treatment--there are good days to be had. we were lucky.
