I think spanking is a very grey area. It's kind of like a nuke or something. You should do everything you can to avoid it, but maybe for the worst instance of behavior from your kid it might work. Don't read into the politics of this analogy too hard you dweeb. I wouldn't judge an already seemingly decent parent for spanking very rarely.

Beyond the issues spanking has, the real problem comes when it's the only way a parent knows how to discipline tough behavior.

I think there are still ways around it. There are still ways to physically intimidate a kid healthily. Raising your voice, getting very close to them, taking whatever problem object they're holding out of their hands, and restraining them if they're acting out. Only do what's necessary to dissolve the tension, never feed into the pleasure of the effectiveness.
