It's just practical. It's both a method of self-defense and a useful tool.

Dont use a regular knife. You need a hobo knife.

A rusty jagged piece of metal with a rag for a handle or a broken metal file jammed into a wooden handle.

A small hatchet works better in both situations.

The strips of forest between industrial/residential areas of a town are pretty good for staying overnight. Unlikely to have issues with anything larger than a raccoon, no one looks in there ever, and you are within reasonable walking distance of useful public facilities.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to all environments.

Layer your clothes.

Get membership to a 24 hour gym. Gives you access to a shower, a locker for your things, and towels to use. Some might even have dryers for swimming gear, you can wash your clothes in the shower and use those dryers to dry them. Free water to refill your bottle. Some gyms provide food on certain days.

Utilize the library for finding jobs or opportunities for free meals like free seminars or volunteer work. Find out which churches give out free meals. Good place to keep your phone and battery charged if you got them.

Be bold about asking businesses if you can volunteer to clean in exchange for some goods or services.

Always try to keep your socks dry and clean.

Don't do/take/accept any drugs or alcohol including weed.

Take into account where the bakeries are in the town you're residing it. When they close up, they'll be throwing out unsold baked goods that are several days old at max.

Or, if you're not too smelly, you can just make friendly, and they'll give you a fuckin' garbage bag full of everything they were gonna throw out. Calorie problem solved, blood sugar problem opened.

Oh there's also some apps like Too Good To Go where you pay a few dollars and get a bag full of unsold and delicious meals from local restaurants.
