I was observing a thread on another website's forum. It was about a guy quitting a fast food job because he they kept scheduling him to get off at 11pm and then having to return at 6am.

Another poster came in and flamed him. He claimed he was a bartender for 3 years and would routinely get off at 3am and then return to work at 6am. He says his strong work ethic got him references and now he makes 130k per year in a sales job somewhere. He feels that if you don't want to sacrifice sleep while you're young you won't get anywhere in life and you have poor work ethic. I think both sides were full of crap.

My answer to this is always "hire more people"

Nah, that's that "I suffered, so you should have to as well" mindset that a lot of people seem to have. Fuck that. I worked at McDonald's before and I've definitely seen them schedule people for closing and then opening like that.

I struggle to believe a bartender can run on only 2 hours of sleep every weekend for such a long period.

It should be workplace abuse that should warrant a lawsuit if forced to work hours like this. I would literally tell them to kiss my ass and refuse to show up for those hours. The only people I ever worked with who worked these hours were shift managers on salary, and they would get home after midnight and have to get up at 4am to open.

Thats harmful to your mental and physical health and nobody should have to do it. If corporate didnt have such a hard on for staffing skeleton crews, then there would be more people willing to do the job, but its their fault and it results in abused workers which causes the customer to get poor experiences.

Definitely sounds like "I walked 15 miles in the snow to get to school" kind of exaggerations. Like it probably only happened once in 3 years and he turned it into "routinely" to sound like he had it harder than the other guy

No, you have a bad manager problem if they're scheduling you so you can't get a full night's sleep.

What does work ethics even mean? And who gets to decide what's ethical or not? random people on the internet?

I don't know. I just take the internet bootstrap guys at face value. It's like the dudes who tell you "learn to weld and you'll be making 100k in 3 years." I know an airplane mechanic going back to school to get a white collar job because he doesn't like his pay or job conditions.

Don't they have bars that 3rd shift workers hang out at 6am?
