I know very little about video stuff so I was hoping someone could give advice. I filmed something on my phone, uploaded it to google drive, and I want to download it so I can edit it.

It's playing fine in the viewer for google drive, but when I download the .mp4 I can't get it to play anywhere.

-windows media player & firefox: just plays the audio, no video
-vlc player: crashes on opening the file
-importing into da vinci resolve: shows an error thumbnail

Anyone know what the problem could be? The file seems about as big as I would expect it to be

That's very odd and makes me thinking maybe it somehow corrupted on the upload?

Try opening the video in a new window or perhaps even in Incognito mode and then proceed to download.

Redownload it or try connecting your phone to your pc and transfer it via USB cable

What phone did you film it on? Just reupload to OneDrive and see if that changes anything. I doubt you know how use DLNA to check if the Drive copy is the issue or it's just a codec issue, but that's also an option.

Actually, I just downloaded the video from google drive onto a different phone, and it plays fine. Could it be something wrong with my laptop? the codecs or drivers or something? Are there any steps I could take to try and fix this?

I ran the windows video troubleshooter and it said i'm missing the HEVC codec (I confirmed this is what the video is encoded in). It sounds like that codec is supposed to come with VLC, but even after a reinstall it still crashes.

i'm trying to use ffmpeg to convert the video h.265 -> h.264 codec, since I can play that apparently. it seems like it's doing something, but I can't tell how far along it is from the output. idk what im doing but maybe it'll work lol

Ok no idea what the problem with HEVC is, but converting to h264 with ffmpeg worked! I then found out I had to convert the 10 bit h264 into 8 bit h264 to import into Da Vinci Resolve, and was able to edit what I needed.

Thanks for your suggestions, it helped me narrow down the problem. Video encoding seems like a headache lol
