Saw it for the 3rd time last night and it's much better than I remember. Yes, there are lots of characters and the plot is a bit convoluted, but after seeing it a few times now I'm able to keep everything and everyone straight and it was quite enjoyable.

Also had no idea Queenie is A Fine Frenzy. This quirky girl I liked in HS listened to her music and I pretended to be a fan to get with her. Didn't work, but fond memories nonetheless.

I still need to see this. I really didnt care for Fantastic Beasts. At first I thought it was because the crowd in the theater from when I saw it was beyond obnoxious. But then I tried watching it again and still wasnt feeling it. I was with friends though so maybe that had something to do with it lol. Gotta try watching it by myself one of these days.

Its a shame too because I love Harry Potter.

Crimes of grindelwald was far too interested in establishing lore for the future of the franchise than it was in telling a compelling story, imo

also a lot of that lore was stupid as shit

I preferred it to the first film, but I found it hard to be too invested in either of them. I always loved Grindelwald as a villain in the Harry Potter books, but I feel they've done him dirty so far. I pictured him as as super charismatic, handsome, looking like a hero but he's actually super horrible and racist. Instead they made him look like a bloating corpse and just act like a typical villain really.

I'm hoping the new actor improves him. But the series as a whole so far is meh.

Literally a baby-switching plot in the 21st century. That's soap opera territory.

Literally reconning Nagini to be a shapeshifted human.

Literally a scene where one person explains their backstory for 5 minutes immediately followed up by another character explaining their backstory for 5 minutes that renders the first explanation pointless.

Literally character assassination for drama and plans that are needlessly stupid for action.

Literally adding a new unmentioned family member to a famous family as a twist.

Literally adding a bunch of pointless characters who don't do anything.

Literally so careless with the lore that they create timeline issues for no real reason other than muh nostalgia.

Literally a shit-tier movie that ensured I would never watch the sequels.

All of those were bad, but this one in particular pissed me off. In the first movie the character is a teenager, the story takes place in the 20s-- that means his supposed parents had both been dead for several years when he was born per canon.

Rowling wrote both the books & this movie-- I don't know how she made such a glaring error.

I watched it and I barely remember a thing about it.

Tbh that's the worst place for a franchise movie like this to be in. That it's so boring and forgettable that I don't even care about it enough to remember it.

Meh. Nagini isn't a retcon as far as I know. Just bc we learn new information didn't mean it's a retcon. Did Jk ever previously state she was always a snake?

And the extra Dumbledore is hardly lore breaking...at least not yet. This is movie 2 of a 5 part series. Further explanations are coming, and you can deduce things aren't quite as they seem from this movie anyways. Grindelwald is manipulative and will tell Credence whatever he needs to hear. Grindy also doesn't know about the baby swap, so he really has no real reason to know Credence's true identity, further supporting the idea that he's just feeding Credence shit to get him on his side.

It's not a retcon, it's just some stupid bullshit that she obviously didn't intend from the start.

Yeah. Surprise standout character tbh. Even when the trailers for the first one dropped, I thought he was going to be an annoying bumbling comic relief, but I liked him quite a lot.

The problem is not whether they fit the lore/are retcons... the problem is that they're shitty plot points and I'm not interested in watching a series that thought they were worthwhile ideas to explore.

How do you even know the Dumbledore thing is a shitty plot point when it's most certainly a misdirect and hasn't played out?

Because they're treating the family name of Credence as something I should care about and a driver of drama, as if it's something worth following the thread of across multiple movies. If they weren't banking on it bringing people in, they wouldn't have made it the ending sting.

And I just don't think a surname, even one attached to magical potential, is interesting. I certainly don't think the writers have the skill to do anything novel with it after what they've demonstrated. We're back in goddamned soap opera territory again. So this signaling that time and importance will be devoted to it turns me off the franchise entirely.

Oh, another thing I forgot is how they removed the potential tension and depth of Dumbledore struggling with his past feelings for Grindelwald versus the knowledge that he must act to stop the atrocities he's committing in favor of "ok, now that I have this vial of blood I can do things, yay." Really shot any semblance of an interesting story in the foot there.

I don't think it's gonna last long enough to have many subsequent films. Won't surprise me if the next one is the last.

Yeah, box offices have been disappointing. I can see them canning it, or cramming the last 2 movies into one rush job.

If you're referring to the family connection:

The fact that they hung their big movie-ending hook on a character that was barely in the franchise up to that point is part of what makes the writing bad in the first place.

If you're referring to the other thing:
If they go into it in future movies, fine. But can you explain the point of the mcguffin blood vial in a manner that doesn't make it actively detrimental to the story they were telling?
