It shouldn't be "to the letter of the law"

We should convict people who aren't following the "spirit of the law"

Fuck em, d00d

I hate asshole criminals getting off easy too, but your "convict people who aren't following the "spirit of the law"" mentality is flawed and a incredibly dangerous way to think TC.

Nah. If an asshole gets something bad happen to him, a decent guy who may ahve gotten put away due to a "no tolerance policy" type law wouldn't happen.

Or billionaries who get away with tax evasion because they use tiny loopholes would get their shit pushed in by the legal system, becuase they know what they're doing, you know what they're doing, everyone knows what they're doing. Fuckers like that shouldn't be protected.

that system is already in place, its why we have a jury of peers instead of a jury of random lawyers and judges. randoms off the street dont know the "letter of the law", and while they're instructed before they deliberate it doesn't change the fact that they're bringing their own bias and opinions.

People love to talk about how grave an injustice wrongful convictions are, but there's also a list of wrongful exoneratations that nobody seems to give af about.

Because a wrongful conviction is far, far worse than a wrongful exoneration. The law should be structured so that no innocent person is ever deprived of their freedom.

2 things:
First, it was set up that way because they felt it was better to have some people escape prosecution than to put people in jail that shouldnt be. Im ok with that.

Second, billionaires and others not paying tax isnt necessarily evasion or taking advantages of loop holes. Its not paying a tax they dont have to.

This was an action movie clich of the 80s and early 90s. "The system" didn't do enough to punish the scumbags, so renegade cops had to take justice into their own hands.

It's a nice story, except it doesn't work that way in real life. When the law breaks itself to get you, it's seldom if ever for the cause of justice.

Dude I'm sure all those inner city kids can get the same people defending them like Harvey Weinstein did.

Hello, I'm your public defender, would you like the plead guilty or to plead guilty and we kick you in the dick?"

That evidentiary kerfuffle was pretty fucking blatant in the Weinstein case. Even an overworked and sleep deprived PD would have sniffed that out without trouble, so that's not really a good point for comparison.

You are objectively incorrect. The right to counsel is a benefit that is much better to have than not. I can acknowledge that it isnt perfect and has issues but it helps a lot of people and is clearly a positive feature of the American system.
