During most of its eight-season run, Game of Thrones was among the most popular shows on television. However, the final season and the series finale appears to have polarized fans of the franchise. During a recent interview with The New York Times, former Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage offered this thoughts about why fans were unhappy. Additionally, his comments are causing another social media backlash today.

[Fans] wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together, said Dinklage, likely referring to Kit Haringtons Jon Snow and Emilia Clarkes Daenerys Targaryen. By the way, its fiction. Theres dragons in it. Move onThe show subverts what you think, and thats what I love about it. Yeah, it was called Game of Thrones, but at the end, the whole dialogue when people would approach me on the street was, Whos going to be on the throne? I dont know why that was their takeaway because the show really was more than that.

Dinklage also noted his appreciation for the destruction of the Iron Throne in the final episode.

One of my favorite moments was when the dragon burned the throne because it sort of just killed that whole conversation, which is really irreverent and kind of brilliant on behalf of the shows creators: Shut up, its not about that,' added Dinklage. They constantly did that, where you thought one thing and they delivered another. Everybody had their own stories going on while watching that show, but nobodys was as good as what the show delivered, I think.

I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them, continued Dinklage. We were going off the air and they didnt know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that. We had to end when we did, because what the show was really good at was breaking preconceived notions: Villains became heroes, and heroes became villains.

Even though many of the complaints are valid, people who have to chime in with "The last season sucked" every time they see something GoT related have gotten old. Especially online where some people still think dissing the final season gets them cred.

Most people don't really care that Jon + Dany didn't get a happy ending. People were moreso mad about the big drop in writing quality the last few seasons and how D&D rushed through the final 2 seasons because they cared more about their future Star Wars project.

They have moved on, its why a potential billion dollar franchise isnt worth shit now.

Move on? I think a massive amount of people moved on immediately after the show ended and they aren't going to come back. Like everything he says there is completely off the mark.

Nobody was talking about Game of Thrones, everyone has moved on except apparently him.

I seriously only seen season 8 of games of thrones and thought it was entertaining. So the backlash on various online communities was amusing to me.

Only reason why I watched it was because my immediate family was binging it and I decided to join in lol.

Also a shitty movie.

It did at least accomplish one thing. It made me realize that I would also hate the theoretical ending of the books, since GRRM was working toward the same broad strokes ending.

The ending would work fine if they spent time setting it up or had any sort of fuckin' nuance to it.

Like Bran being king. That theoretically works because the Three-Eyed Raven is a much more sinister figure in the book and you could maybe see that he intentionally set all this up to put himself on the throne.

Tbh I understand why he would defend something he worked on for almost a decade, but this made him look a little foolish.

I didn't really. I was more mad about how they ruined the final battle with the Night King. Dinklage is an amazing actor but he has the wrong take here. He thinks nobody cared about the White Walkers and is focusing on the other crap. The main issue for me, for the entire run of the show was the Night Walkers. That why I hated the ending

What he said is dumb, but as far as people saying he needs to move on and let it go, to be fair to him, every single interview anyone who had anything to do with GoT does, they get asked repeatedly about what they think about how the fans hated the last season.

If I were him, I'd probably be saying the ending was the greatest piece of filmmaking of all time, and that anyone who disagrees is a poster child for forced sterilization. Really steer into the dogshit.

do you though? in my experience most of the people who say Lost had the worst ending ever are the ones who actually DID get it, the people who had been watching the show entire time and expecting shit to actually be paid off. the only people i've seen who actually liked the ending are the people who DIDN'T get it, who were casuals who tuned in for the first season or maybe two, and then mostly forgot about it until the last season, and came back for the ending and thought it meant they were dead the entire time.

Voltron fans never moved on, either.

I haven't heard anyone talk about GoT in like a year. I think people have moved on. Nobody seems to care about this prequel series either.
