The new House map is more than half finished. And in many states where maps havent been finalized, the broad outlines are already visible. Taken together, the emerging picture is far more favorable for Democrats than most anticipated. As of this writing, it looks like the new House map will be much less biased in the GOPs favor than the old one. And according to at least one analyst, there is actually an outside chance that the final map will be tilted, ever so slightly, in the Democrats favor.

There are a few reasons why things didnt work out as progressive pessimists had feared. One is that contrary to partisan stereotypes Democratic trifectas have arguably mustered more ruthless party discipline in redistricting than Republicans have. Illinois, Oregon, and New York have all pursued aggressive partisan gerrymanders that have subordinated the job security of some incumbents to maximizing the overall number of Democratic-leaning seats. By contrast, Texas Republicans took the opposite approach, opting to fortify their incumbents hold on power, at the cost of leaving 13 Democratic-leaning seats on the map. Meanwhile, many red states have no room to improve on existing gerrymanders.

It's not gerrymandering if it's actually representative of the voting population. That would just make it....accurate.

Is this good news for already blue states or is it affecting red counties in red states? I hope its the latter

Yes, the Democrats, in states where they don't have power, are redistricting to impact the Republicans who have control.

GOP pretty much has the house majority in 2022 locked up because re-districting gave them more safe seats.

Can we stop pretending Democrats are "gerrymandering" the districts when they're actually just making previously gerrymandered districts fair instead?

The "high road" seems to have consistently bad strategy from what I know. There is no way to fix a "broken" strategy when half the players have 0 incentive to remove s key, successful strategy they are using. Your choices are losing where you simply don't have to buy forgoing the effective strategies and compromise your or take the strategy for yourself. What is losing "honorably" worth in politics when the voters don't reward you? And losing will not let you remove the strategy from the game?

And that type of rhetoric has grown strongly in the left during the Trump/ COVID era, from what I can tell.

We'll see.

I remember when I was younger voting for an independent commission to draw our state's districts, knowing it would harm my party, because it was the right thing to do. The measure passed. Since then, Republicans have only gerrymandered harder.

So fuck em at this point. Take away their toys, make them sit in the corner, and fix the system without them. And if the system doesn't get fixed, I'll vote the ones who aren't fixing it out too.
