theres no benefit to SIM cards nowadays. E-sims are superior in every way. Imagine being able to switch carriers any time you want, with no delay. No lock in contracts. Pay for just a single day or even less if you want. SIM cards are old tech and theres no reason to continue using them. Its an inevitability they will be gone, so the sooner the better.

having said that, lmao @ the clowns hating on Apple for being the first one to do it. And lmao @ them even more for grasping at a rumours website to fuel their impotent rage towards them, especially for something thats a good thing

The way I understand it is that currently Apple bulk sells phones to companies with a soft lock that only lets the phone boot up if an activated sim card from the company is inserted in the sim slot. Once there is no physical sim slot . . .

Is this one of those things apple does and non Apple users complain about it, but then change their mind about it when all companies start doing it?

It is going to suck more when the physical sim slot goes.

So if they remove the SIM card slot there will be more room for storage?

Why would you think so? Its a tiny little tray with not much function. How are they going to fit more storage there?

Several phones have sim and external micro SD storage on the same tray.

The physical sim also needs a hardware interface.

If you mean the antenna then that's not even stored in the same area. As mentioned before the sim is only used for authentication.

As mentioned by me. Theres the antenna but theres also the cellular chip. Regardless, simply removing the SIM card tray isnt likely to free up enough space for an SD card reader

Benefit of the doubt: it is being hopeful because no one is this naive.

This isn't an issue and I don't know why you'd think it is. Sprint and Verizon didn't even use SIM cards till a few years ago and there were never issues.

Yes, dear, it is an issue because now you can buy a thin piece of coated plastic which fit in the sim slot.

That's because the CDMA network authenticated differently.

That's not the point I'm making. Physical SIM cards are not required to activate a phone. With CDMA, the ESNs had to be added to your account and activated automatically once it connected to the network. With eSIM, the carrier profile is pushed to whatever whitelisted IMEIs that have been purchased in bulk.

This is a completely different change than removing the headphone jack. The only reason this might suck is because the carriers in places like the US and Canada are complete fucking garbage.

I pay full retail for my devices so my last four phones all had the sim changed by me.

Sounds like more steps to me. And if the website is down or I can't login for some other reason then I can't make the change.

you dont go to websites to change e-sims. if you do, then your carrier has a poor implementation and it will probably be fixed at some point. its going to end up being something like settings -> mobile -> choose plan, once carriers have their precious physical sims yanked away and they are forced to go with e-sims
