I think the people that say it's their favorite franchise are the ones thinking about the stuff outside of the movies. You can't have it both ways

I'm neither of these people. I passingly enjoy a couple Star War things

I like the universe and the spaceships, plus some of the games are good

Well, you're trying to engage the fans on the perceived quality of the franchise, so I think you're just as delusional as them.

There's way more to Star Wars than the movies. I doubt many hardcore fans would say they like all the movies. Some of the more popular characters have never been in one.

It's kinda weird that there even exists a media franchise that is more than 50% garbage (being generous. Realistically it's more like 75%) that is somehow still beloved and profitable purely based on its aesthetic, world building, two good movies, and a toy range.

What's weird about a good high concept carrying engagement? I feel like there's multiple franchises like that. Star Trek is one of them.

I get that it happens. But the sheer number of major missteps that Star Wars has made as a franchise, from the Holiday Special, the special edition changes, the fact that many Star Wars games are dreadful, the handling of the EU, etc.

It's just weird how much good will there is for the franchise, and the surprise among fans when a new thing comes out and it's bad is just confusing.

I think one of the things Star Wars has going for it is a good high concept and aesthetic and also that it's not tied to a single person as a franchise. There exists the person right now who can make the next fantastic Star Wars movie or the next mind-blowing book series plot or the next fantastic Star Wars video game. They just have to be given their opportunity, and that's a greater chance than say, the next Harry Potter (because Rowling is so involved) or the next Lord of the Rings (because Peter Jackson was the guy who got the opportunity and did it justice).

I think one of the problems is that Star Wars means so many things to so many people, and it's in a place where people don't know whether it's meant to be pulled into an MCU "passable but ultimately popcorn" direction or a "deep introspective" KOTOR2 direction. Also there are people who want to see one proton torpedo change the galaxy and there are people who just want to watch a simple man making their way in the universe.

It's super hard for Star Wars to be all things that all its fans want in one individual work so I feel that everything Star Wars that comes out from now on will have its loud detractors. I've made my peace with that.

In truth, the Clone Wars show (but not the first 2 seasons) are probably my favorite SW media lol.

Yeah they have some fucked up behavior where they complain about Star Wars non stop but they won't stop consuming Star Wars.

Even the good one (RotJ) sucks for the most part. But TC nailed it. 2 great movies and a whole pile of who gives a f***.

2 good ones actually

Come to think about it I really do only fully enjoy like, 4 movies out of the main trilogies. But the reason I'm a fan of Star Wars is because I like the concept behind it, and all the expanded universe books and games made are pretty entertaining.

I feel like more people need to realize this. If you're a Star Wars fan but you don't like most of the movies, chances are you like other aspects about the franchise more.

I'd call Infinity War the ESB of the MCU but it ain't as good. ESB is a much more airtight experience. The Dagobah stuff is a tad weak. But Infinity War has the s***ty Wakanda CGI fight in broad daylight. Easy win for ESB.

That's a hot take if I ever saw one. The games and expanded universe spawned from the prequel trilogy era is almost always infinitely better than the actual prequels.

There's a few gems in a pile of coal. Most of the EU was garbage, comparable to the PT and ST.

At least historically pre Disney, the universe has about as interesting a lore attached to it as about anything else out there.

But will easily agree as an adult I dont have hardly any desire to fully replay any of the movies.

I also agree that most of the EU was garbage but they spawn a crazy ass fandom that made Star Wars a shit ton of money.

Funny, though. Fans think EU is great but the canon stuff garbage LMAO.

The prequel fans are the most delusional. Those movies are absolute fucking slogs and full of plotholes to the point that there are whole novels in the EU dedicated to trying to get them to make sense. The modern trilogy being subpar seems to have brought a ton of people out of the woodwork looking for an excuse to not feel embarrassed for liking them anymore and it's ridiculous

Clone Wars is a lousy cartoon. I honestly hate it more than the prequels themselves.

It all comes down to the fact that Star Wars is different for everyone. From the parts you grew up on, to the part of the franchise that you most fixate on (the story? The lore? The mythos? The characters?) to how deep into the franchise you go (do you just watch the movies or do you play the games, read the books, read the comics, etc?).

I enjoy discussing the different interpretations of the series and what Star Wars is to different people. I just wish the community wasn't so toxic =/
