dragon ball didn't? and also, afaik this also only occurred in the US and it kept the original music pretty much everywhere else?

idk if I worded this correctly but y'all know what I mean, right? any interesting stories or trivia regarding this matter?

Music rights require a separate license from the show itself, and it's cheaper for localization companies to make their own music than pay for that license. By the time Funi got around to dubbing Dragon Ball, they stopped being cheap.

DBZ started with the original Ocean/Saban dub up until Goku defeated Recoome. The show went into repeats until Funimation took over 16 months later. This would continue up to the moment Cell crushed 16's head, and then it branched off. The Funimation dub continued in the US, but in Canada they changed over to the Westwood dub with a new intro theme, and dropped the Bruce Faulconer score in favor of music from MegaMan, Monster Rancher, and... I want to say Digimon too (unless I'm thinking of another show).

Then in 2005 Funimation re-dubbed everything Ocean did.

Ocean had their own dubs of Android and Buu sagas when they originally aired in like 2000-2003. I Think it only aired in Canada. The dialogue was the same as the Funimation dubs of Android and Buu Sagas. They used music from other shows the company dubbed in the past.

Youre probably just gonna like the music that you associate with the show. What you mostly listened to on your first watch-through.

Personally, I associate the Japanese OST with the show and prefer that. But it makes perfect sense why those who grew up with Faulconer prefer that.

lmao. Faulconer's music was completely unDragonball-like. it also couldn't shut up. it was constantly playing even when there should be silence. just constant non-stop beep-boops, cling-clangs, wooshes, etc playing in the background.

I'm just glad it did. After watching the series with both, the Falconer music fits DBZ much better, imo. Too many quite moments in the Japanese original.

The only thing worse for DB when it comes to the US was censorship. Goku sounding like a grandma is the worst shit ever, lol.

Are you kidding me? His music was half the reason DBZ was so badass. It's a huge selection of slow tracks that sit well in the background of a drawn out anime scene, plus quite a few energetic ones for character themes. The big moments work better with Faulconer than the ordinary backing tracks.

Insert songs not withstanding, obviously; SSj2 works better in Japanese.

Edit: it's worth noting that a decent number of songs in Super feel way more like Faulconer music than like OG dragon ball stuff.

I think there's something to be said for the fact that Super took some of its musical tones right out of Faulconer's book. Just listen to this and tell me it doesn't sound like it would fit right in line with Faulconer's score:

Honestly, I can see the strong case for the original music of DBZ--obviously it's the original music, so it's going to 'fit' better than something else. However, to say that somebody is "crazy" for thinking the Faulconer score is good and a big part of DBZ's cool factor in the west is just reductive and inaccurate.

Pretty much. I prefer the Faulconer music because that's the version I grew up with, and it's part of the series' identity for me. Just like how some are saying Faulconer's ost doesn't fit the show, that's exactly how I feel about watching it with the Japanese ost (or the Japanese dub, for that matter).

That said, I'm not gonna tell anyone the Japanese music is bad, it just doesn't hit the same for me is all.

I don't think the series reaches the heights it did with its original score. Bruce Faulconer's music transformed the show and made it into something more modern, and cool in a way. Purists need to realize this isn't a knock on the original score (which I like) but it was dated and out of place even in the early 2000s.

The sound quality sounds like something from the 70s/80s as does the music itself. Funimation made the right decision changing it for the new audiences.

I don't think either soundtrack fit DBZ very well despite the Falcouner track having some bangers. The original OST is like the original voice acting, great for Dragon Ball but out of place the longer it stuck around.

A point for Super is that it breathed new life into the soundtrack.

Nobody watched DB/DBZ for the soundtracks. They certainly can prefer one over another, but people watched the show for the characters, the story and the fights.
