Especially when the population increased by almost a third as well?

ah was there a polio outbreak at that time? That would make sense. But what about beds decreasing since 1990 even though the population increased?

My guess is that healthcare treatment over time has improved to the point where having so many beds isn't necessary. Life expectancy in the US has increased every year since World War 1, with the exception of the past year or so thanks to COVID.

Good article, so outpatient services got better. The article also makes the point doing so helped reduce healthcare costs but I feel like the US has the least cost-effective system in world both in terms of how much patients pay and how much hospitals charge.

My mistake, the population increased by almost half rather but the number beds decreased by almost a third. Not sure if thats a more accurate phrasing of the math
