I think I'm too impatient. I have a problem of just wanting to blitz through everything and I keep getting my ass handed to me even after getting enough charms and stuff to handle the enemy.

I played it on PC. Got to the point where I had to use a god mod to complete it. Can't remember if I beat it first or what but there are platforming parts that seem impossible, usually for stuff you don't really need. One side boss I played for hours and hours before knowing I'd never defeat it.

Well, I would have liked it before. I don't game much anymore because I realized how much time and mental energy I've wasted on them. I got really into casual stuff, like the point and click adventures or those things that are basically like an interactive movie. I don't want to get mad or frustrated by things that are supposed to be enjoyable. That's the main reason I haven't gotten a Switch and Dread, I knew I'd be too fucking angry at the game.

Also, a couple of years ago, I told myself I would never farm or grind in a game again but I do genuinely like this game and found myself doing just that in hopes of progressing.

It is a cool game though. I love the Metroid style exploration so that's at least delivering. Last year I finally got around to playing the Ori games which were a blast. I kinda expected this to be like that but this is way harder.

I'm about to get back on it now and see what happens.

Excellent game.

It's also not really that hard once you get used to it. Just keep going and you'll get better.

Im in the same boat, I want to like this game but I think I just dont have the patience for it anymore.

I tried for a long time to face-tank bosses. it wasn't until I tried doing the speedrun challenge and the pantheons that I was really like "wait, there's a better way to do this?"

hollow knight rewards strategic interaction with the bosses. focus first on learning how to avoid their attacks, then try getting attacks in when you have the opportunity. generally you want to stay close to them; it makes it easier to get your attacks in

Yeah I kinda had to really find a zen moment to just be patient and not let myself get too frustrated and I finally got through them but idk if I want to keep playing.

Ah, that's why you were having so much trouble. The Mantis Lords can be beaten when you first encounter them and you can explore the map in most any direction, but they're intended to be kind of a Beef Gate to encourage you to backtrack to a different area after getting the Mantis Claw. The first time you die to them, Quirrel actually spawns in the path back to them and talks about upgrading your nail.

Mawlek is an optional boss and you'd be missing a few of the charms and upgrades that make it a much simpler experience.

This is assuming you're still near the beginning of the game, of course.

I think it's well worth the playthrough. The sense of exploration and satisfaction when you do figure something out/beat a boss really is great.

Not sure if you've played any Souls-bourne type games before, but the beginning part up to a certain degree is going to be really hard, then you start figuring stuff out/getting upgrades and you can blow past a ton of enemies. Towards the end of Hollow Knight I was basically just holding forward and mashing on bosses/enemies and winning. Try to stick it out, I hope you like it.

I consider hollow knight to be the perfect level of difficulty. Every boss takes me about 3-5 tries to figure out the move set and get a winning strategy, which feels about right. The platforming has some really good, clever bits too.

beating the final boss was one of the more rewarding experiences in a game for me

One of the best games I've ever played. Period.

Has a steep difficulty curb and its hard at first when youre weak with no tools, but you'll get there

I did look at a guide for one thing but felt dumb because I was right by it and if I had been a little more patient, I would've gotten there anyway lmao.

the thing about guides is that, with very few exceptions, there isn't an actual order that you have to complete things in

Honestly, if you need help vs bosses, Simply going in and surviving/ not getting hit for a full minute while staying close to the boss, and you'll learn like 70% of the bosses.

What areas have you unlocked?

Because the game is indeed extremely long.

I think I put about sixty hours into it and I didn't even do the Godhome stuff.

I'm starting a new job in a week and I really hope I'm finished with this game by then because uh... this shit is consuming my life. Every time I'm like, "fuck this game, I'll never beat it" I just barely scrape by a boss or find something to help and progress enough to keep me hooked a little longer. Haven't played a game until sunrise in a very long time.

Actually pretty easy, just sort of time consuming. Aside from a few really simple and easy ones, enemies only respawn when you sit at a bench. You can clear the path ahead of time and then Dreamgate back to the start. There's a couple spots with tricky platforming, but that's about it.

I rarely used spells on my initial playthrough unless it was necessary, but once I did post game fights and a more playthroughs I used it liberally.

To be fair, I was pretty close to the end and still had very little idea just because I was terrible at picking up the lore lol

I can't beat Grimm or the Hollow Knight, so I'm just getting skewered and ground up over and over in the white palace like I'm actually ever going to beat this place lol. Every time I get through a section with like two life things and think it's done, there's just more and more.

I would do White Palace before doing Hollow Knight...no spoilers though.

Grimm and Nightmare King Grimm, while daunting at first, are actually some of the more fair bosses in the game because there isn't a lot of random stuff going on. When Grimm jumps, this attack comes out. When he starts on the ground, this attack comes out. Etc. There's no easy way around them, just have to practice.

For the white palace, definitely equip the charms that add soul when you get hit and the one that heals soul over time. There's no enemies, it's all platforming.

The Royal Retainers, the harmless mobs that do nothing, are there to give you Soul. You can heal to full whenever you meet one by Dream Nailing them to gain soul.

There are a couple of different ones. Hiveblood lets you regenerate the last HP you lost, so you can just pause after every failure and regen. You can also use Deep Focus + Grubberfly's Elegy + Grubsong to gain a lot of soul whenever you take damage.

Longnail/Mark of Pride help out a bit by extending your nail reach, making it a little easier to pogo.

One charm you should actually unequip is Sharp Shadow. The platforming in that area is designed around the normal dash distance and Sharp Shadow increases it.

Yeah, the former is a real PITA. Lots of bullet spam. For the latter charm selection can help a lot. Quick Focus, Grubsong, and Baldur Shell if you want a safe. methodical fight. Quick Slash, Mark Of Pride, and Fragile/Unbreakable Strength if you trust your dodging enough to speedrun it, which is easier than it sounds. You can push The Hollow Knight through phases VERY quickly due to the slow windup and recovery of some attacks. Also, if you can get good at pogo striking you can cheese almost every attack by bouncing off his head (exceptions: ground slam and ground spikes)

There's also a couple of funky mage builds that are pretty fun for fighting most bosses in general. Shaman Stone + Flukenest in particular are pretty devastating vs large/slow moving enemies.

I finally got through the White Palace. Then I delivered that stupid flower. I fucking hate this game. Gonna play for a few more hours then go to bed.

I do want to mention two things that really helped me get better, not watching a TV show while playing and turning off the rumble. I don't know if it's my controller or the game but that shit was so violent it was distracting.

It legitimately took me about 12 hours. If done perfectly, it can be completed in about three minutes.
