Nicole Kidman is getting honest about casting.

The 54-year-old star opened up to Dujour about her latest film, Being the Ricardos.

During the conversation, she spoke about the casting culture in Hollywood.

Theres a consensus in the industry that as a female actor, at about 40, youre done, she said.

I never sat in a chair and heard someone say, Youre past your due date, but Ive had times where youre turned down and the door is shut on you, she continued.

Betty White is damn near 100, yet still getting roles.

You're not gonna get as many roles, sure, because half the point of you getting roles was for your looks. Still clearly getting major roles, though.

Nicole Kidman is probably trying to get more than being in joke roles as an old lady.

Woman who has been in at least one movie per year for the past 20 years complains about not getting roles in movies. Sounds like she just wants some attention. These rich celebrities have a hard time realizing you don't always get what you want in life.

Your roles and competition change as you age, but unless you're terrible, they don't become more scarce.

It's a pretty common thing that is said so I doubt she said anything here that they disagree with. If anything it was worse in the past.

If Nicole Kidman who is one of the more critically acclaimed actresses is saying she lost roles because of her age I'm sure it's a pretty common experience overall.

Also I think actual leading actress roles probably do get quite a bit more scarce as they age.

She hasn't come to terms with the fact that she can mostly play a young grandma at this point.

Wouldn't this depend on the roles she's auditioning for? I mean, at 54, she's not about to play the lead coed in a spring break flick.

She might be losing roles because she looks fake.

When you have a 50 year old woman who looks 50, she can play a mother or an older woman. When you have a 50 year old woman who is rich and makes herself look artificially younger, she can realistically only play a rich older woman who has the financial resources to make herself look artificially younger. She doesn't look like a normal 50-something.

I don't think she is saying anything other than she lost roles she auditioned for because of her age. We have no more context than that.

She looks good for her age, but she looks rather Barbie-ish.

My god, this is such a dumb take. There are plenty of roles for older women. What she is saying is that the roles she would like to play are becoming less and less viable.

Just out of curiosity I looked up for a male actor her age.

I found Mark Ruffalo. He was in a movie called Dark Waters a couple of years ago. His wife in that movie is played by Anne Hathaway. Who is 39. 37 at the time.

That logic alone kinda shrinks a lot of roles for actresses compared to actors of the same age because that stuff happens all of the time. Not sure why people are acting like this is unique to Kidman. If anything she has it much better than most.
