They recently released a set of demands towards Europe and the US that would have to be met for them to pull their military from the border and it included a guarantee that NATO would never have a presence in the Eastern block and also that Russia would get a veto on which nations would be able to join NATO. There's no real practical benefit to them invading ukraine, but there is a practical benefit to them ratcheting tensions up so high that Europe blinks and withdrawals into itself. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz.
