Generally politically speaking, but also for things like vaxxes.

At this point, both sides are entrenched in their ways. If side B is unvaccinated, do you really think bothering with them will change anything? After this long? Of course it won't.

If side A is a democrat and side B is a republican, why is side B going to bother trying to convince side A that their party sucks? Or vice-versa?

I'll never understand how many hours each person wastes on a daily basis making fruitless arguments/discussions with the opposition. Literally nothing will change. It's too late.

Why bother?

there are some undecided folks out there, or people on the fence. it's rare, but they exist

people can change sides, i'm living proof of this. but this kind of shift is usually gradual and is caused by a series of events. i used to be a very strong Libertarian when i was in college. but as i grew up and gained life experience i started shifting towards being a Liberal. every conversation or argument i had on the subject sat in the back of my head for years and years. eventually i found myself agreeing with the other side more than my original position.

Pineapple is a top tier fruit.

Doesn't belong on pizza though.

Even if the person you're engaging with directly isn't open to changing their mind there's always the possibility that another person reading will be.

modern political discourse isn't about winning hearts and minds

it's about rallying the base

which is why trump was so successful: he realized the republican base was a mixture of extreme racists and moderate racists who just care about tax cuts

so when you yell "punish the minorities and cut taxes!" each half of the republican base only hears half of it, and it's all they want

democrats' base are fundamentally harder to rally, despite being more numerous, because they frequently want things in opposition to one another
