Overall, very impressive campaign. I was skeptical of the open world thing, but it worked for me. The game is really fucking hard on Legendary though. I think it might be the most difficult one in the series not counting Halo 2. This is even factoring a lot of the conveniences that the very nature of the campaign provides you. In the open world, you have a lot of freedom in how you want to tackle encounters. So yeah, you can load up a Razorback with power weapon-armed Marines, and they will annihilate mostly everything you see. But eventually you have to get out or the Warthog will flip or it will blow up. And in the traditional levels you obviously don't have as many options.

The saving grace compared to older campaigns lies primarily in the weapon sandbox. I would say every single weapon in the game is useful, with maybe the Plasma Pistol being the sole exception. And even that of course you can still utilize the noob combo with. I think it's very impressive what they managed to do with the weapons. A lot of the ones that feel underwhelming in multiplayer work very well in the campaign. Being able to juggle your equipment is also essential, and I found all four of them to be useful throughout the campaign. Especially when upgraded. For some reason though, they excluded the Repulsor from the campaign. I'm not really sure why they came to that decision, since it's probably the most unique and interesting piece of equipment outside of the grappling hook.

But of course it's the boss fights that really make Legendary difficulty so hard. The game's AI is pretty smart and quite aggressive. Bosses in particular are extremely aggressive. I know you can cheese some of them, but other than just trying to juke them with my movement, I didn't manage to find any cheap strategies. And because of that I died many times on all the main boss fights. So maybe the boss aggression and health/shields could be toned down a bit. But the difficulty feels just right for Legendary in most non-boss encounters. It's very tough, but you're also a lot less restricted than you were in older Halo games.

As for the story, I have no idea why they decided to take it in the direction they took it in. I get they are probably going to pump out single player content that expands upon it, but the game tells you basically nothing and gives you far more questions than answers. Just very weird.

Which boss fight was the hardest for you?

Mine would be the two Spartan Hunter battle where one has a chopper while the other was flying around covering above ground.

Took me a while to take down the surrounding enemies and coming up with a strategy for taking one of them out. They take a lot of damage and were really aggressive.

I agree with the game being one of the most difficult. I think the main campaign missions had some of the hardest moments.

I'm not really sure which was the hardest. I think the clear easiest one for me was Jega 'Rdomnai, which is pretty odd considering he's one of the last bosses in the game. Everyone else gave me trouble for various reasons. Even some of the Banished Hunter encounters were pretty damn tough.

The one you mentioned is an interesting one, since it's the only one in the open world not counting the HVTs. But yeah, it was surprisingly difficult to come up with a strategy for that one. And having so much room to work with also made weapons slightly harder to scrounge up. I used the one Brute's chopper against him and the other one came down from his platforms after killing the first one. Ran over him too. But it took a while to get that strategy to work.

Also I don't think they'll do it, but the Legendary ending cutscene does show you Atriox from a first person perspective. Would be a nice surprise if they ever decided to have him playable like the Arbiter was in Halo 2.

The final Brute Chieftain in the fight with The Harbinger was pretty intense as well. Him, Bassus, and Escharum in his hammer phase are all out for your blood. Their aggressiveness is unmatched by anything else in the Halo series in my opinion.

Funny story about Bassus

I was rolling around in a Razorback with a squad of five marines armed with arcane sentinel beams. Three survived that mission up to Bassus and they killed him within three seconds of the cutscene ending. Just fucking vaporized him.

The duo boss fight was still my hardest fight in the game. Bassus was actually my easiest boss on legendary. The only challenge in the game are the boss sections. The rest is pretty easy. The end boss with all the enemies was my second hardest though.

Im working on a LASO run now. Im attempting to get the secret scorpion gun in hopes to cheese it.
