and I think it's funny that his name really is just...William, he just chooses to go by Willem! Like how Colin Powell's name really isn't pronounced "Colon", but he just chose to say it that way.

Could be SAG related - you're supposed to have a unique name if you're part of the union, so they'll actually ask people to change their names if someone else already has your name.

That's why "Michael Douglas" became Michael Keaton. And why "Michael Andrew Fox" always went by Michael J Fox. Because their names were already taken.
