Isnt all that great. Playing it right now and sure its fun but people talk about it as if its the second coming of Christ.

I had more fun playing DKC 1-3 for pure platformers

Mario Bros 3 was better imo. Even NSMB DS lol

Mega Man X and Super Castlevania 4 also, but those are moreso Action Platformers

for what its worth Im probably only like a third of the way through. Around the Forest of Illusion area

It was one of my first games and it blew me away.

Also I realize B to Jump and Y to sprint is probably the better control scheme, but as someone who had a GBA growing up, A jump and B sprint is just so much more natural for me

I think Super Mario World's strength is the consistency of its vision. It has a few simple ideas, and it executes them well. Many other Mario games throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, whereas SMW is INCREDIBLY tight.

The continuity of the game world is great, too. To the point where it would be relatively easy to convert the game into a Bowser's Fury-style open world, because the layout of the levels has geographical continuity, so you feel like Mario is actually journeying through the world.

Im not a big fan of it anymore, but it was awesome when it came with the SNES

None of those games existed yet except Super Mario 3. It was the launch title for the system. 16 bit systems were still really new; the Genesis had only been out for like a year and Sonic didn't exist yet. It's why it was such a big deal.

Same. I can respect it being incredibly well made and having some of the best gameplay of any platformer, but I find it a bit boring nowadays. It's just not very challenging. Which is fine, but after decades of games, romhacks, etc. building off of what SMW did there's not much reason to play it outside nostalgia.

Not that many power ups. Don't really like Yoshi. Don't like the Spin Jump either.

Played that game a whole lot as a little kid.

Honestly it's great the first time, but as you play it more the multiple exits are more of a drag than anything else.

SMB3 provides pure dopamine without boring shit like finding exits. The Inventory system is infinitely superior to going back to donut plains for a cape, or dinosaur island for a yoshi.

Make sure you unlock all the secret levels before judging. The game unfolds like crazy

after beating one of the bosses the game asked Have you found the red and green switches yet? And I felt like an idiot lol. Apparently levels that have red circles are the ones with multiple exits

Theres a reason SMW is the game with a ton of fangames/romhacks, long before Mario Maker.

my issue with SMW is the artstyle. In SB3 every world had a theme. It was clear what the theme is and it stuck to it.

SMW levels all look the same. world 1 and world 2 look the same to me. Other worlds don't feel different enough to me.

The second problem is how badly abused the mechanics are. The spin jump has lead to kazio which is incredibly hard and allows levels that abuse the design to imo ruin mario.

What happened to normal mario levels? Why is it all kazio now?

There is a little exercise that you should give a shot, and it is implicit while retro-gaming: you need to believe you are living in the 80s. It really was the best of the best experience and fun back in the time.

Is SMW like Seinfeld?

Its pretty fun, actually. After getting out of the Forest of Illusion I started backtracking to find hidden exits to levels Ive already beaten. Its fun.

When I got NSO I started playing it randomly for the hell of it and instantly got sucked back in and played all the way through. It is good.

With that said, it has been out classed by Donkey Kong Country since its release. The Donkey Kong Country series was the pinnacle of the genre. Good thing Mario went to 3d because it was toast otherwise.

SMW is great because of the physics and general clarity of the design, though I agree about the exits getting tedious.

SMB3 is less focused but I think it benefits greatly from the experimentation at play. I think it's the better of the two but you can't really go wrong with either

I take it back. Its fantastic. Just got to Chocolate Mountain, found every secret exit on the way (with some tips). Activated every switch palace and found the hidden exits to each Star Road level. I can go straight to Bowsers castle but Im gonna continue down the normal path

It was the last true great 2D Mario. Like someone else said, good thing Mario went to 3D and excelled there because DKC has the 2D style on lock.

No one says Mega Man X is amazing. It's just the first in a long line of good games.

More people shit on FFIX than praise it. They usually put games like FF7 and FFX on a pedestal. If anything, it is underrated.

The only one you might have a point with is DKC2, but that game is legitimately one of the greatest games of all time and still hasn't aged at all. So hard disagree.
