tell me you aint sick of them peddling their magic - magic so easy that the complex becomes simple and the simple becomes desirable. magic so simple it takes only a cardigan or a wrapped ham or a buick. magic that lets a time when all was so simple come back easily - its not gone, friend, you just need to buy some of this here magic. denounce the complex, they say; its too hard! but i know i got eyes and i know i got thoughts and i know that complex does not mean complicated and that simple does not mean easy, and i know that simple is not a destination but a form of magic. and they sure do like when people buy their magic, otherwise they lose their own magic. ive never seen someone wearing a cardigan look dismayed when the nostalgia merchants show them to me, nor a ham-eater whod hid cyanide in his ham, nor a driver taking his buick to a lonely home. and i surely have never seen any nostalgia that left the customer scared, shocked, or scorned - that is what trauma and memories are for. but i dont buy these nostalgia merchants promises of nostalgia, nor do i call nostalgia by a different name than trauma or pain or wisdom or joy or futility. it sure would be nice for these merchants if it was all too easy to classify a spectrum of colors into three or four and damned if they dont do the best they can to spread the good word, but i will leave my cardigan and my ham and my buick in a world where they are a cardigan and a ham and a buick and not validation or contentment nor success.
