If so, what are the "Gateway" whiskeys?

Have tried to like whiskey and scotch a few times but overall it never really stuck

Jack and coke is just an overall decent introduction to Whiskey.

personally not a fan of Jack, always found Jim Beam to be smoother. If you see Canadian Club at the liquor store, buy a bottle and try it out,,,
its pretty damn good. Gatorade/7up/sparkling water all mix really well with it, or just straight shooting is great as well

What have you tried? My gateway scotch was Lagavulin. Expensive gateway to say the least. Its an Islay scotch which is a very love it or hate it type of scotch.

Dickel is a good option. A bit more expensive than Jack and a better overall quality imo. I used to like the rye version.

I shoot whiskey. Fireball is easy because it's candy. Jack is disgusting. Jim beam is nice but jameson and proper 12 are my favorite to...drink irresponsibly...

Buffalo Trace for Bourbons
Any kind of mild Highland Scotch for single malts, something like Johnny Walker or Dewars for Blended Scotch.

Speyburn is probably the best single-malt scotch out there if you're stingy.

Shooting whiskey is great, bloodmoon brought up Jamo and Proper.12. Those are pretty good whiskeys for sure, def give them both a try, theyre similar

So let's clear one thing up. The terms whiskey and scotch aren't interchangeable. Bourbon, scotch, and rye are all different types of whiskey. Scotch is meant to be sipped. Bourbon can be mixed like the standard jack and coke. Rye I don't have enough experience with.

Crown royal is a good cheap one. Easy to drink.

I want to be a bigger fan of whiskey and Scotch but I find it just a little too smoky. If I'm going to sip something it tends to be a good dark Venezuelan rum, not the clear or spiced kind. Something like Diplomatico.

I love the Islays, so although Lavagulin has been mentioned I also really dig Ardbeg and Laphroig.

As for Bourbons, Rowans Creek is good shit (not sure how widely available it is outside of KY though) and I also had a real decent one from Hatch Distillery in Door County WI.

And yeah, cant really go wrong with any Macallan.

Im a big time bourbon drinker, there's some really great affordable bourbons on the market to try out.

As far as gateway whiskeys, I'd honestly suggest a Canadian whiskey. They're very smooth and go down easy. They're how I got into whiskeys, because when I started they all tasted too harsh for me.

Once you get the taste for Canadian whiskeys, though, move on to something else. Their flavor profile is just really, really bland and there's so much more interesting things to drink out there.

Also, drink with a big ol ice cube to start, but not a bunch of small ice cubes. A big cube will cool it and dilute it just a little bit, while smaller cubes will just melt and make half your drink water.

Above all, remember: there's no wrong way to drink. Enjoy what you enjoy, and ignore anyone that screams "you're doing it wrong!"

God bless, I cant every time Ive tried Crown Royal I get so fucked up that I literally come on GameFAQS and swear I'll never drink again.

Not sure whats up with that honestly.. same thing with Hennessey. I can usually down whatever else fine but if you give me a shot of these I'm down and out for the count.

If you're looking to go up a shelf in quality, I'd recommend replacing the seagrams with Beefeater. Much better quality and not costly.

start cheap and make old fashioneds, whiskey sours, manhattans, and other cocktails that don't seek to destroy the liquor's flavor, but are enough to tone down on any residual burn/smokiness.

It's a very popular gin. Just a higher quality than seagrams which is bottom shelf quality.

I find Birddog to be a good cheap option. The one in the tall skinny bottle not the short fat bottle.

I drank this 3 times in the last week after only drinking like 6-8 times in the last 5 years. I hate the taste of all alcohol,but other than that I don't really have any complaints. And I haven't gotten a hangover. I do drink water in-between shots and always eat a meal before I go to sleep tho. Which Im pretty sure is all good to avoid hangovers.

That's the best of what I've tried. The "Reserva" in particular is just perfectly sippable. Appleton and Gosling are reasonable brands, though, since apparently Diplomatico is extremely region specific as to whether it's easy to find or very rare.
