Because, even though the reason people don't like it is viable and there's so many reasons to hate that it threw away a lot of what you expect from RE games,.... it's just so god damn good as an action game. It makes games like the Gears of War that came after it seem immediately outdated in comparison. At least for gameplay mechanics. I really love the new direction of the games after it too, but god damn am I disappointed that I don't get too see how those mechanics would of evolved in the last 10 years. There's still no 3rd person shooters that even come close. It's not really a great example of a RE game but I had so much fun with it. --- I don't believe in belts. Two protagonists with different story viewpoints, a nice amount of ammo and support items scattered around, A and B scenarios that properly changed things up for the replay (this is the main thing I didn't like about REmake 2...they botched the A and B scenario system setup. That, and taking out the spiders), nice enemy variety, fun minigame, and some nice unlockable to go for. Baby's first Resident Evil game.
But really probably one of the few "Adult" games on a Nintendo console.
That and the overall watered-down gameplay.

4 is one of the best RE games. It has the 2nd best Mercenaries mode next to 6.
