WASHINGTON A Florida man was sentenced Friday to just over five years in prison for assaulting police officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

The sentence, of 63 months, was the longest one yet imposed among the more than 150 defendants who have pleaded guilty to taking part in the siege.

"It has to be made clear that trying to violently overthrow the government, trying to stop the peaceful transition of power, and assaulting law enforcement officers in that effort is going to be met with absolutely certain punishment," said U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan.

Longest sentence so far. They still should get more, but at least he'll be in prison for years.

That's roughly 5 years, but keep in mind they could go out on parole earlier so it's really not that long.

That's Fed time and generally make them serve most of their time before releasing them for parole.

Still, 5 years is not enough. You got people that went away longer for non-violent drug offenses.

I agree it's not enough, but 5+ years is enough to get most people's attention. IMO sentencing should start at 5 years and then the judge works up or down from there.

that sounds like it has to be close to the minimum sentence. i would assume most people who assault police get 15-20 years. but you know what they say when you assume.

I'm watching Four Hours at the Capitol on HBO MAX right now and jesus christ, it's much worse than I thought. Like there was a police officer who lost a good chunk of his fucking hand. There were people who worked in the government who were genuinely afraid they were going to die or get raped. Some of them were ready to fight if they had to. How the fuck is this not being treated for the attempted coup it was?

But it was just a tour group!

Eh. He who shall not be named put a cop in a headlock and didn't really do much time for it. It's hard to say without looking at lots of sentencing data whether this is typical or not.

I don't see how it isn't literally treason. I'm not a fan of the death penalty but 20 years and up sounds right to me. All these sentences are a joke for sure.

In Canada the max sentence for assault on an officer is 10 years. 14 years for aggravated assault.
