When the character has been locked out of the car and his keys are inside the car... how. The button to lock the car is on the key itself, there's no other way for the car to lock

I'm absolutely flabbergasted by this common trope

You can lock the doors via buttons on the inside of the front doors.

I've locked my keys in my car. I have a habit of pressing the lock on the car door as Im getting up to get out, and there has been an instance where my dumb ass left my keys sitting on the passenger seat rather than putting them in my pocket like I usually do.

I lock my car with the door button, I don't have a fob

Every time I do it I hold my key in my hand so I know I'm not locking it in

Lies and Decepticons. There's a button on the door itself. Also, this predates electric locks and remote fobs.

Its also easy to put my keys in my purse, put my purse in the trunk, and close the trunk. Oops. (Ive never done this, but Ive had some close calls.)

Was this a high shower thought? I feel like there are several missing steps in the thought process that led you to this weird conclusion. Either that or you have experience with an extremely bizarre car.

Some cars have an auto lock feature. I always check to see if it does and disable it.

I did it a few times with my first truck (91 Toyota pickup). It had manual locks and windows so Id push the lock down and close the door not realizing I left the keys inside.

I ended up carrying a spare key tucked inside my wallet since I almost never take my wallet out while in the car.

You must be young TC. Before key fobs keys got locked in cars all the time, nowadays cars won't lock if the fob is inside.

My "drive to work and run errands" car doesn't even have a fob/key with button situation, or auto-lock for all doors. Have to manually lock each door.

I don't recall ever locking keys in this or previous cars, but it does sound like something I'd do. >_> I have locked myself out of the house a few times. That was one thing I liked about one of the apartments I used to live in, it didn't have the simple push button lock on the knob that makes it easy to lock yourself out, it only had a deadbolt that you had to use the key to lock, so it made locking yourself out impossible lol.

It was really simple to do accidently, before electronic locks. The doors were locked by this little button in each door. You'd press that as you got out of the car (was faster than putting the key in the door to lock it) and that was it. You could easily lock yourself out with those. And it sounds like people kept that habit for electronic locks
