Two reasons: makes the bar easier to grip by preventing it from rolling in your hands, and it makes it easier to maintain form. The main issues with the alternating grip is that one side pulls differently than the other, leading to muscle imbalances. Lifters can counter this by changing sides every so often. Another issue is that the underhand arm is at risk of a bicep tear with heavier weights. This is because your pulling with your bicep more that with the over hand grip. Thats why you can typically underhand row significantly more weight than an overhand row.
