Like a short film or what? Are you working in sound? A good way to get your feet wet with both sound and camera is to offer to shoot some monologues for theater majors at your school. You can charge too but don't be a dick about it.

Well just little practice projects. Recently I've been removing audio from scenes then replacing it with my own sound design.

There's a few things you can do. Aside from anything narrative, I'd say practice your shot sizes and framing. Get a friend or a some sort of stand in (mannequin or whatever) and practice establishing, full, close ups, mid etc. Practice movement pan, tilt, handheld etc. Make sure everything is in critical focus.

All this practice will help when you finally get someone in front of the camera. When you have actors you don't want to worry about your competence with the camera.

Also when you do eventually have actors make sure they're good. Make sure they're better than you and don't feel any insecurity in that. I just shot my short doing sound and camera and acting all at once and it was stressful af, but I didn't have to worry too much about directing my actors because they were Steppenwolf graduates lol

What kind of camera and sound equipment are you working with?

Well something you can do in regards to sound is record yourself saying a few lines, put it in whatever program you're using and clean it up as much as possible with whatever noise reduction tools they have in the program. Use compressors and whatever you can to clean it up, then add room tone to see if you can make something usable out of your recording.

Now that sounds like good practice. Now that I think about it, I'm also not good at matching BPM when combining music. Skipped that chapter in class.
