All of these are purebred dogs, only one is an actual American Pit Bull Terrier. The vast majority of people have no clue on what they are looking at.

Daw, she's adorable!
So far my girl Pebble also has really bad separation anxiety. We originally got her one of the wire kennels but she chewed up the plastic base and found out how to open it. We were afraid she'd hurt herself, so we got a more robust kennel. She seems to like the new one much better, but still hates to be away from us.

Now that I think about it, she's had about 6 hours unattended with our cats. Last time they were all sleeping in the same room when we got back lol.

That's irrelevant to the people who just want to hate pitbulls unfortunately. Someone posted a study saying pitbulls accounted for 60% of all fatal dog attacks and I pointed out that the study actually categorized 25 totally different breeds under the umbrella term pitbull.

Everyone of them just dismissed that point as irrelevant or made some dumb response and ignored it.

Pretty much any short haired, muscular dog is considered a "Pit Bull" these days. If all of the Bull and Terrier breeds, Pit-mixes, unrelated breeds, dogs that even remotely look like a bull breed are Pit Bulls then all of these dogs are Dobermans.

Luckily your experience owning a pit mix will be completely different in the real world than it is places like this. I took my dog for a walk last night at like 1am and the only 2 people I ran into just commented on dogs in a positive way. And that's been my consistent experience over the last 6 years. It's mostly people who don't get out and just read articles online that have a problem. Which, you won't ever bump into cause they're always in their house. Not to disregard people who've had real experiences with poorly trained dogs that now have a rational fear. It's just, those are few and I've never actually bumped into one in the street. No one has ever even commented on me having my dog off a leash because they can read his body language and see he's well trained. But god damn, that's not easy to do. He was never vicious or showed any sign of aggression, but he definitely had to be taught how the fuck to listen and not just run off lol.

Personally I'd never trust my dog off a leash just because I want them close to me in case other people or animals are jerks. But I agree with the rest of what you've said. Heck, I've personally been attacked by two dogs, both neighbors, and I still will never hate the breed for it. Blame the owner, not the animal.

I definitely respect your perspective. Having him off the leash definitely gives me anxiety for his safety. That's why I mostly do it in the middle of the night when everyone's inside and there's no traffic. I also don't want to make people uncomfortable because they don't personally know he's a family friendly dog that literally grew up around kids since a puppy. I can literally give him his favorite food, let him start eating and then pull his body from it. He just starts wagging his body and looking at me like "Can I go back to it?!?" Lol. I think it's good to prod them with annoyances to really make sure anything a kid could do to them wouldn't trigger them in any way. Like, pull his tail once and see how he responds. Stuff like that.

You should be prepared for the worst treatment a kid can give a dog and not just expect the kid to be on good behavior. My dog cowers to everything lol. Which is exactly how I want him. You can't simultaneously have a guard dog and a dog that's good for kids. You're trusting that he never gets his wires crossed. He shouldn't even have the guarding wires if he's gonna be around kids and other people

Did you read the rest of this topic? Others have already posted statistics showing that you're more likely to
  1. Die by Covid than be attacked by a Pit Bull
  2. Be struct by lighting than be attacked by a Pit Bull
  3. Never actually see a pure bread Pit Bull because 25ish breeds are lumped together to make all the statistics you're referencing.

I agree that every dog should know at least the basics of sit, stay, come, stop, and drop it. The larger the dog the more advanced you should go.

Luckily she's super smart and is learning well. It hasn't even been two weeks and she already knows sit, paw, come, and drop it at about 80% removability. Oh and we're working on stay.
