I cant even remember its details. Is it actively malevolent towards humans or is it more as a generic poorly written the logical thing to do is kill humans programming for some dumb reason?

Actively malevolent, at least in the first two movies. It becomes self-aware and decided it needs to kill us all when we try and shut it down.

They extract the genetic material from the remains of the human race and begin a cloning program, rebuilding the human race in their image. They then educate them that it was man's hubris that destroyed the world and urges them not to make the same mistakes.

A fraction of a second after being switched on, it calculates that humanity is the biggest threat to it, and it preemptively wipes us out in self-defense.

Hmmm. I think it might try to detect the next biggest threat.

Nature. Meteors. The Earth itself. Perhaps other rare cosmic disasters. Maybe anti-aliens?

And try to compensate for those. Probably by concentrating by spreading itself around in space.

And probably in the movies Skynet should have already been working on this, just in case humans did get the jump on them.

But that wouldnt make for a fun movie.
