I don't know how it works on Xbox at this point, but on PS4/PS5 it still first installs the game from disc (if you're doing PS4 on PS4 or PS5 on PS5), and while that's happening also starts the update download in the background and then installs the update when it's finished.

So basically now if you're installing the PS4 version on a PS4 from a PS4 disc, or the PS5 version on a PS5 from a PS5 disc, the game will actually get installed twice.

And it's not like these are small update files either - on PS5 it's 39 GB and on PS4 it's 65!

Seems like something they should have done from the start >_>

Bruh I don't think I'll ever play these massive games on any non-streaming platform, that seems like it should be criminally charged as torture against your drive.

Another reason not to bother with discs I guess

The update file is actually even bigger on PC (77 GB) but of course that would just get included on any future download.

So the real problem of course is just disc-based copies.
