The bigger surprise here is that Whole Foods doesn't have a compactor out back.

Its sickening. Well at least they aren't pouring bleach on the food to prevent scavengers. Some places go that far

Fuck artifical scarcity, there needs to be some sort of law against doing this. At the very least against tossing food like this

Jeff Bezos is just doing his part to help out the homeless by leaving all of this fresh food for them. What a nice guy

Wow, that's just completely unnecessary and pointless. The damn food's already thrown out; what do they care if people steal it?

I used to cook for a homeless shelter feeding between 150/300 nightly and half our food came from Trader Joes. Instead of throwing away, they donated. We just had to go get it.

I would have lamb, yellow fin tuna (all sorts of expensive fish) and their fancy shmansy vegetable packs like baby asparagus tied with cornsilk, to cook regularly.

If a customer wont buy and it has a shelf lifenot much they can do with it if there isnt a local place like where I was to take it off their hands.

Lawyers. Don't want to get sued by some bum who got sick off of the hamburger you tossed two days ago.

But then no one would ever buy food, they'd just wait for them to toss it and Amazon Whole Foods would lose their money

The answer to WHY they don't just give it to food banks and shit is because it's too expensive to put all of that stuff on a truck again and ship it somewhere else.

It's a mix of that and they are afraid of lawsuits. Although I've read somewhere that I think in the US there's some protections against donating food that went bad or is actually bad but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

It isn't just food. You'll see it with "last season" clothes or bedding. It's a LOT of different things.

Incorrect again!

Food banks take care of their own transport.

"too expensive" = a bullshit capitalist excuse for keeping that wages+salaries line item on the income statement below their benchmark metric.

I have had friends in the restaurant business who have said they wish they could donate unused food at the end of the day to food shelters, but something about past lawsuits keeps their companies from doing it?

Anyone else ever hear anything along those lines? I could see companies making up some BS so they dont incur the cost of delivering/preserving food for delivery, but at the same time, the US is so damn lawsuit trigger-happy, that I could easily see one instance occurring that made several companies in the industry say Nope, not getting caught up in that.

literally every grocery store does this. food that isn't "pretty" enough to sell either goes in the trash or produce gets chopped up and put in those prepackaged things. but people literally won't buy stuff that has small defects when there's a dozen perfect ones right there, because people want what they're used to. like, a lot of people don't even realize that carrots come in colors other than orange.

Charge less for the beat-up tomatoes, and suddenly they're more appealing.
