Murders, drive bys, assaults, extortion, stealing, selling guns = cool
Selling drugs = "OMG YOUR DESTROYING THE HOOD!"

Murder, arson, stealing, conning people, prostitution = cool
Loansharking = "OMG YOU EVIL PIECE OF SHIT HOW DARE YOU!?"

Having a highranked OG keep doing drugs because he has done it his whole life? Perfectly fine.
New recruits buying and doing drugs? You destroy our reputation, fool!

For real. "Hey Sweet, while you were in jail I acquired a car mechanic shop, a piece of a casino right on the strip, and have been working with world famous rapper Madd Dogg."
"But the hood!"

I feel stupid for not ever thinking of that. You're right. He loves drugs so much he has a custom license plate with "Sherm" on it. That's cool though. Totally not a liability either.

Yeah, SR2 doesn't even attempt to make the Saints look better than its rival gangs.

BS wanted the families to start selling drugs. It was Sweet who was against it. Sweet is fine with killing people and terrorizing the hood and the innocent people who live there with drive bys and gang wars, but doesn't want to sell drugs for moral reasons. He's fine with hanging out with someone who does drugs though.

And another thing, he also told OG Loc to go to college or do something else besides being in a gang as he and Smoke already messed their lives up, but when CJ gets him out of jail and Sweet has all these other opportunities, he just says no and goes back to the hood. Sweet is dumb.

While I like GTA more with it's relatively more serious tone and writing, I do appreciate SR's embracing of its insanity and sociopathy.

The one that always got me was Niko in GTA4. His whole character arc was that he fled the old country to escape all the killing. Then he proceeds to muder his way through multiple parts of Liberty City.

I guess they feel the MCs need some redeemable quality's and honor for the sake of being a likable character.

But protagonist like them can't really have it both ways.

This extends to other media like movies. Suicide squad being a perfect example. I wish both movies would have commited fully to them being bad guys. Instead they turned it into yet another super hero movie.

John: "Dutch was a good guy! We all were. Sure we were robbers but we always stole from folks who were well off and gave to those who didn't have much. You men of society just don't get it"

*later in game, Dutch appears and immediately slits innocent woman's throat during a holdup*

It's a little weird because they never/rarely name the drugs they're talking about, but it actually makes perfect sense. Sweet only really cares about the Family. The issue he has with selling crack cocaine is that members of the Family are smoking it and getting absolutely fucked up. Big Bear is the example the game provides where he used to be a tough enforcer for the Family, but you find him as the personal slave to a drug dealer.

Ryder doesn't smoke crack, he's smoking "water" which is weed laced with PCP. I'm sure that's not great, but I imagine it's not as bad as crack.

I dunno. I've been playing through it and the sense I got was that John has come to realize that Dutch was full of shit. He just bought into it when he was younger.
