Some districts are removing Ds and Fs from the grading system. A student will have the chance to redo the assignment or exam to relearn the material. If a student fails the final exam or to master the material of a course, they receive a grade of an incomplete.

Seems easier then improving kids to the standard.

So they're just replacing D's and F's with I's to let the students know they failed.

Most teachers have been doing this since the 90s and probably before that.

Not surprising though. Every high school teacher I know says their admin forces them to pass failing kids anyways so the school doesn't look bad.

It is kinda stupid when you think about it. Does it really matter if you got a D or F if they both mean you don't get credit for passing the course? Never really thought about it, but it is kinda extraneous.

Everybody passes with a C!!!! Everybody wins!! If anything this will cause attendance to get worse.

D is usually passing. You just have to average a C or higher sometimes.

Back when I was in hs, there were no Ds. It was A, B, C, F. But really there were no failures, because teachers were forced to come up with bs "make up assignments" to give students the C. And that was almost 10 years ago.

Odds are Ds and Fs have been completely redundant for a while now, and people are starting to ask "why pretend?"

Failure, like expulsion doesn't actually benefit children in any way. School is supposed to be a place of learning, not a prison.

How will they learn if they just keep moving up grades by doing nothing?

Depends on the job. You can usually fuck up a ton of burgers before they give up on you, but you kind of need to get surgery right immediately.

Besides, that's not a fair comparison. A student doesn't typically fail the whole course on one bad assignment, but it is supposed to be a wanting sign they will if they don't get it together. This sounds like the usual slacker mindset of "there's nothing so important I have to do it right on any kind of deadline."

This is a bad metaphor. Getting one F doesn't mean you fail the class, which would be the appropriate thing to relate getting fired to. This is about individual exams/assignments. Did you go to school in Cali?

No child left behind. No it's about giving kids a head start!

Seems like a good thing. It seems kinda dumb to just give a kid a D or F then move onto the next topic when the kid is obviously still struggling.

Looking back trying in school was kinda a waste. Just work as much as you can in jobs that don't require graduation, invest and retire at 50.

an Incomplete is the same thing as failing, it's not a passing grade
