I only watched the first episode of the live action series, and it was a big red flag to me, and he kept bringing her up too.....

If I remember the anime correctly, Jet always wanted a family, but through everything in his life and with his ex, it just never worked out.

Which is why in the anime, Jet actually really enjoys when Faye and Ed join them. They even give him and Ed a whole episode together. She is the daughter he never had. The bebop is his surrogate family. Even more for him than Spike, as he more clearly wants that family life.

It's like they just didn't get it.

Just wait until you see how they ended it.

I thought he was pretty bad in this first episode. By bad I mean shit.

I don't know if I'll be able to watch more. I think I'd rather just them just continue the anime a bit with the Spike/Vicious backstory movie the creator had planned but canned in place of the movie we got.

If you think THAT's too much of a deviation, wait until the final episode and what they do with Vicious and Julia.

Eh, of all that bad decisions of the live-action production, I honestly don't mind this one all that much.

Yes Jet does have an actual family, but he's also estranged and divorced from his wife, so it's the same surrogate family idea.

I mean, it's not a complete and total deviation, but it's watered down for no good reason I can see

To fill time, of course.

It also gives more time for Jet's characterization, which was comparatively lacking compared to Spike and Faye in the original. Not saying that's a good/bad thing. It's just more focus on Jet if one were looking for that.

There are some nice payoffs to it later on, and some not nice payoffs.

I feel like people would have enjoyed it more if they didn't expect it to be a 1:1 of the anime. The producers should've went with an original story set in the same universe.

Even by those metrics the story failed.

At attempts to directly ape the anime.
At attempts to present "like the anime but with a twist".
At attempts to make something completely original.

The only success I feel they had was with Episode 7, which was an example of the second one. That was carried due to character interactions and acting.

normal audiences didnt like it either if netflix canceled it after three weeks so maybe its just bad

Jet being a whiny baby the first two episodes made me stop watching. Spike! Spike! Spike! Trust! Family! Partners! Fucking, shut up, dude.

Its not about any of that. The OG is about 4 lost souls who flirt with the idea of family in their loneliness but its not in the cards. The live show just chucks the melancholy and bittersweet right out the window. The heart of the show was thrown away.
