48th: Metal

Metal was an ability that debuted in Squeak Squad. As mentioned yesterday, none of the Squeak Squad abilities ever returned.

Metal turned Kirby into a hunk of blocky, heavy metal. Makes sense, considering the enemy he gets the ability from is larger than your average enemy. It slowed Kirbys movement significantly due to his weight. In the air, he COULD hover, but upwards movement was very, very, very slow, and if you were to let go of the A button for even a second, you would lose lots of progress in your flight.

Offensive-wise, Metal fared better than Mini. Without doing anything at all, enemies would get hurt by your presence. This was NOT, however, the case with bosses, likely because it wouldve made things, particularly Boss Endurance, too easy.

It did have two moves. The first was that Kirby could turn into a ball. This was nothing like the Ball ability from Adventure, as Kirby couldnt bounce due to his weight. Instead, it rolled down slopes like Stone can in some games. (Interestingly, while Stone was in Amazing Mirror, it was NOT in Squeak Squad.)

The other move was more important. By pressing Down + B while in the air, Kirby could slam down for an attack. This was pretty much the only way of damaging bosses. But since it was so difficult to get into the air, it was, by extension, difficult to use the move successfully. This move could also be used to destroy metal blocks (metal vs metal?) and the wooden stakes often associated with Stone and Hammer.

(Two Squeak Squad abilities eliminated in a row. Ouch!

Metal is mostly just Stone, but again. I wish the ability itself was more interesting.
