Let's have a console with CD quality audio, slightly better than SNES graphics, and seemingly no great advance on disk/cartridge space. Could a Sega CD have even run a game like Super Metroid or A Link to the Past?

This topic title perfectly describes the Sega CD.

Its start up screen and music was so fucking cool though.

The CDs held 100s of megabytes of data. That's how you get CD quality music. Though you also ended up with weird stuff like the SMT port on Sega CD where they used awful low quality audio generated by the Mega Drive for battles to avoid load times. And man do battles happen a lot in that game.

Sega CD at least made a little bit of sense. It filled a niche in the market and had something unique to offer compared to the base Genesis.

What in the fuck were they thinking with the 32X. though? Why would you release an expensive add-on right before the launch of your brand-new console?

I believe that was Sega of America who didn't want to abandon the Genesis as it sold well in America, whereas the Mega Drive was in distant 3rd in Japan and Sega couldn't wait to get a new console out.

yet music was apparently very good compared to cartridge games. Like here's a track from Final Fight CD (1993):

Hell yeah. I had the model 2. Sometimes I would wait before putting a disc in because it sounded so cool

Sega CD had those "adult" games that almost got the Government to restrict video games forever.

I doubt it would have been forever, but it might easily have been the next thirty years or so. It's crazy to think we could be seeing profanity and bloodshed for the first time today in home console gaming.

The degree to which Night Trap was misrepresented is comical in its absurdity. >_>
