For me (The Fiend Award) Worst Wrestler is a tricky one because we dont have Bray here to slam dunk the category. He only wrestled one horrible match this year.

I make the case for Matt Hardy. He had a couple flashes where he was able to hide it this year (particularly against Darby Allin) but for the most part he is just physically done. And because he has name value he has gotten a LOT of work and all of it has served to kill the heat of the people he works with.

Worst Wrestler
What does this really mean? I'm not interested in thinking about who had the worst matches but rather rather who dragged everything they were in down, or made me less interested in what I was watching in general. I can think of no worse culprit for this than Keiji Mutoh, who in February won the GHC Championship, putting an end to Go Shiozaki's title reign that had managed to drag NOAH to relevance even amidst 2020's scene, and at the same time putting an end to that momentum as NOAH's main events suddenly became extremely missable again. He's continued to drag down better and more over acts than him since and has to be a strong candidate for this category.

A last minute entry, with only one match under their belt in 2021 and it aired the day before I'm writing this, but I will drop a nod to Brandi Rhodes who despite her wishes that were made public on Rhodes to the Top absolutely has no business near a wrestling ring.

Sticking with AEW, I don't think there's anybody I think of more when it comes to dragging down the quality of something I enjoy than Matt Hardy, who has managed to not only make the people he feuds with (including an interminably long feud with Orange Cassidy that I'm still not sure is over) less interesting but also all 30 members of the Hardy Family Office and anybody else who gets in his pull.

By the criteria I've laid out here, this next candidate may initially seem less strong - the show he wrestles on doesn't have very far to be dragged down, in all honesty, but his merits as a candidate simply can't be ignored. Between his appearances on Fox News and his ongoing reign as the NWA World's Television Champion, Tyrus has been stinking up the joint in hitherto unforeseen ways in 2021. If you're not familiar with Tyrus, he's the former Brodus Clay, except he's fallen far from his athletic peak. And that should be all I need to say.

Mutoh is an incredibly good shout I only forgot about because I am not a regular NOAH viewer. This man still has multiple years left on his contract and had buried one of their young stars.

Holy shit I forgot about Dominick Mysterio. I've not seen a less convincing person playing pro wrestler since Chris Von Erich, and the dude makes TV every week and had a tag title run. Can you ever imagine "Dominick" in a program that isn't being carried by Rey? He can just about pull off cosplaying some of his dad's moves but doesn't even sell me that he's actually a wrestler, much less a tough or good one that I want to see fight

Oh boy. Some fun awards here. I don't know if I'm going to be able to catch all my thoughts in one post so bear with me.

WORST WRESTLER

Steiner kind of hit a lot of the "highs" on this one. To me, the Worst Wrestler has to be someone constantly featured despite being aggressively bad. With the bar for wrestling being higher than it's been in ages, you'd think it would be difficult to get wrestlers as awful as a Virgil or a Kendall Windham on TV anymore. But hey, people found a way.

In WWE, it's difficult to find someone as bad in almost every facet of the game as Dominick Mysterio. Is there anyone out there who believes this guy would even be employed if it weren't for his father? I am a little surprised that Steiner left out Omos but WWE has tried to hide him by pairing him with AJ. He's got size and something of a presence but his stuff from what I've seen looks so awkward that I can't believe he's on television. To round things out with the 'E, I can't really vote for The Fiend since he was around so little this year but I can give a shoutout to his child bride Alexa Bliss. The gimmick was the dirt worst and here's hoping that Alexa's absence is them trying to get everyone to forget it existed.

AEW has also repeatedly booked and featured people this year who have no business in the ring. Matt Hardy is practically immobile and I have no idea why they keep having him wrestle. HFO is something that could disappear tomorrow and I don't think any AEW fan would care. Jade Cargill looks like a million bucks but she can't even be trusted to go longer than a couple of minutes (and sometimes even that's pushing it). I don't quite know where else to put her in this rambling write-up, but all the people who are trying to convince me that Maki Itoh is any kind of good need to get their heads examined. Wrapping up with AEW, I'm giving consideration yet again to Abadon. I know she's been mostly relegated to Dark and good on her for getting into shape, but I've yet to see anything that would justify her still being around and still keep being booked as strong as she is there.

Jordan Oliver is terrible, has been pushed hard everywhere he regularly works, and after seeing some of the young guys coming up out of the Dragon system I'm tired of people hanging on the excuse that he's young and learning. Hell, not even just the Dragon system. Daniel Garcia is about the same age and he's so far above Oliver in terms of ability that it's laughable to compare the two. Steiner hit the nail on the head so perfectly with Keiji Mutoh. His title reign in NOAH made the company a joke, his run damaged Kaito Kiyomiya (the guy many see as the future of the company), and at the end of it he dropped it to the broken husk that is Naomichi Marufuji. His time in NOAH has done nothing but hurt the company, just like he's hurt every other company he's been a part of over the past decade and a half.

Honorable mentions to Tajiri, BxB Hulk, and Edith Surreal. Surreal and Tajiri were garbage in the handful of matches I've seen from them this year and Tajiri seems to be doing everything in his power to get everyone in AJPW to quit, but I didn't see enough of them to care. Hulk was saved by finding whatever he had left in him to get one good match with YAMATO. Hopefully that's the last time he ever has a serious singles match again because, like Matt Hardy, Hulk is so broken down that it's uncomfortable watching him.

WORST EVENT

Unlike my previous write-up, I've got a pretty firm grasp on what I feel were the five worst events I watched this year.

#5: NOAH Great Voyage 2021 in Fukuoka

This ended up being the best of the worst for me due to having a couple of fine matches on the undercard, but this is the show where it felt like NOAH went off the rails for me. The main event was Keiji Mutoh, fresh off his inexplicable title win over Go Shiozaki, defending against the young man that is being groomed to carry NOAH into the future Kaito Kiyomiya. Admittedly, Kiyomiya is still young and growing into that position but he's closer to being that guy for NOAH than just about anyone else they've had. So what does NOAH do? They book him to struggle against a man who looks old enough to be his grandfather and can barely stand. Mutoh is completely done about two minutes in and the match goes for another thirty. Then Mutoh wins. Clean. With a roster as good as theirs, they have no business putting a main event this poor and Mutoh has nothing to give to wrestling anymore. Can't wait to see him against SANADA at the NJPW/NOAH crossover show. I'm sure that's going to be a real banger. <_<

#4 WWE Survivor Series 2021

Probably some recency bias here, but I can't think of a more pointless show this year than Survivor Series. There's a WWE show I think is worse than this one that I'll talk about later but even that had some kind of purpose to it. No one cares about SD vs. Raw, they largely feel like the same show with an interchangeable cast. They didn't care enough to make a storyline on television for putting together the teams this year instead opting to announce them via Twitter. Then they ended up shuffling all the teams around because this company has no vision except the same one they've had for the last seven years that has driven off most of their casual viewing audience. The matches mostly stunk (Becky/Charlotte was good but had no stakes at all), the booking was some of the worst WWE has put together, and another sacrifice is made to the altar of Roman Reigns. I doubt anyone is going to look back at this show save for doing reviews for podcasts in a few years like so many do with 2000 WCW.

#3 NWA When Our Shadows Fall

Hey, remember how pre-pandemic the NWA had some buzz about it and was putting out enjoyable programming? Nothing groundbreaking or exceptionally great but it was an easy, fun promotion to watch. Well, due to a number of reasons, that's gone and When Our Shadows Fall really drove that point home. Fred Rosser/JTG and Kamille/Serena Deeb were about the only things that were fine on this show. This was the first and only time I saw Tyrus wrestle this year. I'd like to keep it that way. But what makes it really bad to me is that they capped this middling show off with a Dusty finish to Murdoch/Aldis. Whole thing felt like a waste of time and left me with no confidence in NWA moving forward.

#2 GCW Acid Cup

This is technically two events but Eddv okayed me considering them as a whole event. On paper, this tournament could have been good. You had some good prospects like Lee Moriarty, JJ Garrett, AJ Gray, Calvin Tankman, and Arez as a part of it. Laredo Kid was even announced for it (he wrestled the first show and dropped out of the second probably after seeing what a crapfest this was). Then the tournament started and it all fell apart. First off, the tournament was held in some random parking lot in Florida in front of seemingly 20 people. It must have been some really crap weather because just about everyone seemed off their game and poor JJ Garrett ended up vomiting in the middle of his match due to heat stroke. These conditions didn't help the bad performers in this, Jordan Oliver and Edith Surreal, who were booked to wrestle each other for an unreasonably long time on the first night and had one of the most amateurish showings I've ever seen for a supposedly upper tier indy. Then they took Jordan Oliver, easily the worst wrestler still in the tournament, and booked him in three more matches on the second show before winning the whole thing. And to top it all off, you had to endure the obnoxious commentary from Kevin Gill. I'm certain that GCW has had worse shows this year because this company has no concept of quality control and their fanbase are largely a bunch of inebriated mutants who do not care, but this could have been a quality showing from them and they chose to make it garbage.

#1 WWE Superstar Spectacle

Be honest - you forgot this happened. This was a show that was done to "highlight" all of the "wonderful", "exciting", and "talented" superstars from India in the WWE. I think all the quotations there made it clear what I thought of these showcases. Watching guys like Finn Balor and AJ Styles work ultra basic, practically first match out wrestling school caliber showings in front of nobody was worse than watching Jordan Oliver wrestle in front of 20 drunks in Florida. It had a purpose, unlike Survivor Series, but there wasn't anything good here to boost the show (which is why I put it above the Acid Cup) and I don't even know how many of the Indian wrestlers featured here are still employed.

I kinda want to consider Apollo Crews for worst wrestler, or at the very least worst gimmick

but yeah his 7 month feud with Big E really killed the latters momentum. And I would argue his Nakamura and Priest feuds have been pretty bad as well

MOST DISGUSTING PROMOTIONAL TACTIC

I'm open to hearing some of the more traditional carnie picks here but frankly I'm over some of the picks I feel will get people's votes or nominations. I'm over WWE's relationship with Saudi Arabia; I can't work up any outrage over seeing a scummy company taking a scummy deal. Likewise, I don't care about WWE firing people over "budgetary reasons" while making a billion dollars. One, I feel like they've needed to slash the roster for years. Two, I get to watch some of these guys like Buddy Matthews be awesome somewhere else.

I only have two that I've given any real thought to. Keiji Mutoh employed in 2021 is probably my #1 this year. I've already mentioned him a couple of times here so I won't go on another rant about how he's going to hurt NOAH just like he hurt everywhere else he's been for years. I'll also give a nod to Rob Black restarting XPW. He chickened out on his original promise to come back with a tournament featuring nothing but cancelled wrestlers but the idea that XPW has any place in the modern wrestling landscape is ludicrous. We'll see if he actually runs another show in 2022.

THEME SONG OF THE YEAR

"Kamen Buto-Kai/Masquerade Ball" - Masquerade's Theme (Dragon Gate)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8bO64rdFYo

Dragon Gate has some great themes in general and Masquerade has been one my favorite stables in terms of looks, combination of talent, and of course theme music in a long while. It's going to be interesting to see where this group goes given certain recent developments. <_<

"Ruby Soho" - Ruby Soho's Theme (AEW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8uHyAg_Kl0

Taz sings along to this almost as much as I do when it plays! I feel like it's cheating a bit to take an already fun/good real song and license it for your talent (Cult of Personality rocks on its own). However, this song has helped elevate Ruby Soho and, as a fun aside, I think it helped get her over to my husband.

"Cult of Personality" - CM Punk's Theme (AEW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4v7RUBF8CQ

. . . Screw it. I love this song and I love that CM Punk is back. Fight me.

"FILTHY" - Tom Lawlor's Theme (NJPW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjM4F57xZjM

As one of the three people who regularly watch NJPW Strong, I feel obligated to push how awesome Filthy Tom's music is on this show. I hope that Tom gets a proper tour in NJPW once travel isn't a nightmare. He's been carrying Strong on his back during this period.

"The Chairman's Intent" - HOOK's Theme (AEW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw7IIX66sgU

HOOK finally made his in-ring debut last night, coming out to this banger from Action Bronson. I know he's a meme but I think the company sees a lot in him already. Might as well make sure he has a great theme from the start.

Worst Event:

I have to go ahead and concur with NOAH Great Voyage 2021 in Fukuoka as one of the worst of the year. The work was still (largely) snug and the best you can do with your clap only crowds in Japan, but the booking malpractice at play going with Mutoh in 2021 is just baffling. NOAH was a promotion gaining legitimate momentum and they went and TNAd it up so fucking hard and I can't figure out why. The theory was to do a good number at Budokan during the pandemic which is...stupid.

ACID CUP probably was the actual worst worked event of the year, what with the fact that the heat stroke halfway killed several of the competitors and the work itself was sluggish and awful despite booking good talent.

I also have to go ahead and give Wrestlemania 37 Night 2 a nod here as it was basically the worst WWE could be. Usually WWE PPVs avoid being awful just because the work is good and some of the acts still somehow give a shit. However, on Wrestlemania, they put all the good work on Night 1. Night 2 had the awful Roman Reigns squash of Edge and Danielson, the surprisingly poor Ripley vs Asuka, a racist drum match, a Steenerico match built around Logan Paul, The Fiends only match of the year, and a Nia Jax match.

Worst Match

This is actually kind of a hard one because I didn't really go out of my way to watch much bad wrestling at all this year. Keiji Mutoh vs Kiyomiya stands out because of it being such drastically bad booking and not exactly a good performance by Mutoh.

Randy Orton vs Alexa Bliss deserves a mention because of how...that just should not have ever happened.

and my final thought is Yano Toru vs Chase Owens at Grand Slam Night 1 - its a 28 minute Yano/ Chase Owens match contested in front of an echoing cavernous Seibu Dome crowd. nuff said.

Best Theme Song

Cody Rhodes Theme Song: Kingdom Remix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBMf1rLWlmI

Wrestling has more than one...royal family.
Look I'll stop nominating it when it stops being so fucking awesome and when Cody stops having such fucking iconic moments with it alright?

Gonna Second the Masquerade theme. Just listen to it. It's awesome. The anthem of the best DG Unit since I've followed DG (the last two years)

Darkside of TR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uugQ9wowA4

Look its the Midnight Express theme but the Midnight Express theme fucking rules. RIP Bobby Eaton.

Tarzan Boy - Jungle Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhMigi9nxuc

I too love all the licensed music floating around AEW, but my favorite is definitely bringing back Baltimora for the always exciting Jungle Boy.

Treble Path - The Great O'Khan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMRKeCz1Ypo
I love this theme for completely different reasons from the rest but O Khan's presence as he enters the arena to this theme which perfectly matches his aura was a sight to see even in this years shitty bloodless New Japan arenas.

Worst Wrestler - Hannibal (Devon Nicholson)

This guy has been making the news as of late for brutally assaulting a referee (Lando Deltoro) that now needs to fund his medical expenses for the damage done to him. He is rightfully getting denounced for his actions and should be facing criminal charges for what he did.

I see Dominck and Alexa Bliss getting nominated for this award and I blame that on WWE's bad direction (Alexa's booking since allying with Wyatt has been utter garbage) and forcing everyone to work their house style which is stunting Dom developing his in-ring skills. As for the veterans (Matt Hardy, Keiji Mutoh), I at least get the impression that they're performing as best as they can despite being deep in their decline. Hannibal has zero excuses. He's had an awful reputation for years and has just shown he can't even be trusted in the ring with others. If this award has any merit to it, Hannibal should be in contention over some of the suggestions being made.

Worst Event - WWE Survivor Series 2021

Nothing particular stands out to me from being particularly garbage, but this year's Survivor Series was so uninspired that it convinced me that the PPV should be retired. It is now just a annual "RAW VS SMACKDOWN BRAND ALLEGIENCE FIGHT FOR YOUR BRAND THAT SOME OF YOU ONLY BEEN A PART OF FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS FIGHT FOR YOUR BRAAAAAAAAAAND!" concept that was fun the first few times they did it (2005, 2016) but now is just lazy booking solely to hold over fans until the new year. It is just as bad as holding a Hell In A Cell match annually for the sake of holding one and because the PPV is named after it.

Worst Match - Randy Orton vs The Fiend at WrestleMania 37

Bray Wyatt has become a regular offender in my books for being a part of some of the worst matches/angles in WWE each year, and despite having only one match he continues the trend this year. I wasn't expecting much from this match to begin with outside of the Fiend winning, but only 5 minutes of a "match" until the stupid finish involving Alexa Bliss turning on Wyatt and Orton rolling him up for the victory was complete and utter garbage for a wrestlemania storyline that had been built for almost half a year.

Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic - WWE firing people citing budget cuts while having record profits

Firing a third of your in-ring talent (including several consistent Main Eventers) under the excuse of budget cuts when your company is having notable financial success is pathetic.

Theme Song of the Year - I have 5 nominations...

Kota Ibushi - Golden Star
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj_6ix1Zi6k

Probably the best NJPW theme in recent years, and it was great to hear this when Ibushi finally won the IWGP title and defend it at Wrestle Kingdom.

Will Ospreay - Bring It Down
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8P80Lw_DIc

Another excllent NJPW theme. It really works well as his entrance as he established himself as a main eventer over there.

Malakai Black - Ogentroost
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a1pNdkcNcc

Probably my favourite of the new AEW themes this year. Honorable mentions to Jungle Boy, Miro and Negative One's themes.

Happy Corbin The Good Life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7QvWWBTvLw

This is such a catchy douchey heel theme and I love it (even if End of Days is still better).

RK-Bro Talk To Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAiRYG2xhxA

For tag team theme mashups, mixing Orton and Riddle's themes together works works really well.

Best Non-Wrestler - Bad Bunny

Not sure if celebrities count, but the Bad Bunny WrestleMania Tag Match was surprisingly good and he clearly put the effort in to make the most of his time there unlike a lot of celebrities WWE bring in. If he doesn't count, Arn Anderson gets my nom.

Worst Wrestler

Gotta concur with poor Dominik. It actually says a lot about the ability of Seth Rollins to carry him to a reasonably solid match in his debut, because it's been all downhill from there. I'd say send him down to developmental, but they have their hands full trying to make people give a shit about Von Wagner. Omos is a close second. He makes Braun Strowman's rookie year look like damn near Kurt Angle's.

Worst Event

Crown Jewel 2021, regardless of actual quality of the PPV.

Worst Match

Tamina and Natalya vs. Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. How you manage to be a wrestler for over a fucking decade and in the biggest match of your career, manage to completely fuckup the basic concept of tagging on a hot-tag? The match was also terribly boring.

Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic

Having active talent reference recent firings in storyline. Like holy shit, not only do you release like 200 people over the course of a year and a half, but then have people like Edge use it in a promo to get heat on Miz? Fucking shameful.

Theme Song of the Year

Considering how they're building him up to basically be the Final Boss of WWE:
https://youtu.be/n0QT_teLcNk
Roman Reigns - Head Of The Table

Wasn't big on it at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I think it's the perfect theme for what they're going with for Reigns. I also think if you drop the opening, it can work as a badass face theme down the road.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SLgKlJVD28&ab_channel=AEWMusic
Adam Cole - All About Tha (Boom!)

Pretty good new theme here, too. Sucks to lose the UE theme but this is definitely an improvement.

Best Non-Wrestler

Pat McAfee. If you can somehow make Michael Cole tolerable, you are damn good at commentary.

Taz is a good option as well. Team Taz is an example of a great midcard stable and he's fun as hell on commentary. I remember not being a fan of his back on his Smackdown days but he's doing great work on Dark.

There ain't much great about NXT 2.0, but I will say Malcolm Bivens is fucking delightful.
