Let's say Disney's first choice for director of Episode X posted this on Twitter as a public response. There's no script yet and no cast. The director won't budge. The protagonist is a Black male or Disney finds a new director.

Do you think Disney would acquiesce? Would they find a new director and go with a White female protagonist? Would they find a new director and go with a Black female protagonist? Or would they go with a male protagonist of another ethnic group?

I would say "I don't want Episode X".

Disney didn't build a Star Wars land at Hollywood Studios and a $1,000 per night Star Wars hotel only to let the franchise quietly fade or be kept alive by humble streaming offerings. A series set thirty years after the events of Episode IX will be an ample opportunity for a soft reboot.

Depends on the director and how much clout/pull they have in the industry. Them saying this publicly would also make execs think twice about replacing him, as that'd be seen as blatantly racist and be horrible PR.

I don't really think Disney would be so against the idea that they'd replace a director, though. Why would they be?

The statement itself would be stupid, but Finn got done dirty in the sequel trilogy, so a movie where he could take a more central role would be something I would be interested in.

Finn was never the protagonist. He was third place behind Rey and Han.

That's why I mentioned Twitter.

Once it's out there in the public that a director will only do the movie if the protagonist is a Black male, Disney faces public opinion. Do they go with a White lead? Do they outdo the director for inclusiveness and have a Black female lead? Or do they go with a male lead but make him Asian or Latino?

That's the real question. What would Disney do if someone publicly put them on the spot like that?

The very nature of "soft reboot" is to state that making an Episode X is a bad idea.

Star Wars movies, fine. I'm honestly still cautiously looking forward to Rogue Squadron (which is apparently back on the menu).

But I'm very much against an "Episode X". The Skywalker Saga is over.

I don't think the director would have to give an ultimatum like that. They'd be able to steer the movie in the direction they want anyway.

Maybe they could continue the story with Finn now getting some training. He's definitely force sensitive.

Yes I love the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars miniseries, too, but it was declared non-canon long before Disney came along.

Also you can't just make an entire movie about Mace Windu soloing a bunch of battle droids.

Lots of reports indicate that the story team and KK don't really compromise when it comes to these types of decisions. If they want or don't want something, and the director is going against them, they have no problem letting them go. As seen by the countless "creative difference" exits we've had in the past few years.
