i'm on Season 4 right now.
Kes is gone
and Seven of Nine is here. i love her, and not only cause of the skintight outfit this time. her constant problems with normal social interactions are just adorable

so last episode i watched. "Mortal Coil" Neelix tried to commit suicide.
i was honestly not emotionally prepared for that

Many people dislike Neelix. They keep saying that he is annoying

Personally, I like him

Seven of Nine led to a lot of interesting stories about The Borg

I can't remember which season the episode is in, but "One" is probably my favorite episode overall. Voyager encounters a large nebular expanse that the crew can't cross, and Seven has to manage the ship's functions alone for an entire month. (For reasons.) The episode acts as a catalyst for pushing her character development forward.

The biggest problem with Neelix is that he's given more importance than necessary. There are times when he's included in bridge meetings for zero reason other than him being a main character.

Neelix as a concept was brilliant. He was introduced in The Caretaker as actually kinda shifty, inveigling his way into the crew by making himself important enough that they needed him, but also a little manipulative and using them for his own ends (albeit for the protection of Kes rather than anything too malicious), with his overly jolly and friendly/comedic demeanor seeming to be a mask he wore to help ingratiate himself with everyone. He was almost like (more space-hedgehog-y) Dr Smith type, or like Trance off of Andromeda. Like, they needed him, and he seemed sincere enough, but could they really trust that he wasn't up to something self-serving at any given time.

The problem is that by the second or third episode he was already pretty much just the comic relief, like the writers' room had already forgotten that his jocularity was a bit of a front, and as soon as they left the space that he was familiar with, rather than using that for character development as he tried desperately to find a reason to stay important so he could keep getting his way, they usually just went with "hurr durr he is a bad cook, and that's funny."

Ethan Phillips did a good job with what he had to work with, and there are still some good Neelix episodes, but as a character he never really delivered on his initial promise.

"Jetrel" was Neelix's high point, and that was in the first season. He was actually really good when he stopped being the comic relief and had a serious episode like that one and Mortal Coil. The problem is that there just weren't many of those episodes.

so, some of Sevens Borg nanos activated and started to grow a drone.

honestly, this is one of those times i have to agree that Janeway is a bad captain. she should have just ordered to have the whole thing jettisoned into space

EDIT: while that was one of the coolest drones so far and it turned out well in the end, i still stand by my previous statement

Be sure to check out Deep Space Nine as well, if you haven't already. The production levels are on par with Voyager. (The first season is a bit rough, but it gets much better as the series goes on.) The distinction between the two series is the length of story arcs. DS9 eventually focuses on plot points that drag on across multiple seasons, whereas VOY had a lot of self-contained plots and one-off episodes.

i might watch Deep Space afterwards, we'll see, i'll probably take some time inbetween first

they keep hitting gold on the psychological/ philosophical elements.
this time with the Doc struggling with the memory of having a patient die cause he had to choose which one to operate on first
and for Janeway, what does that mean about the very nature of his being a computer program or person

Star Trek was meant to be originally about the idea of humanity coming together as a species and uniting to solve our problems and meet new cultures
DS9 is basically Sisko is the good guy that does bad things to do good
DS9 has two semi-main characters that are both the exact opposite of what Star Trek is supposed to be about Quark and Garak being criminals

I agree with this. Sisko is constantly playing tug of war between the Federation and the better interests of the Bajorans. He can't always operate within the confines of Federation rules without compromising the fall of Bajor or the end of a very fragile alliance that's keeping the Alpha Quadrant from outright war. When Janeway violates the Prime Directive, her reasons are often arbitrary.

so the ship has been lured into some sort of space creature that hypnotises and eats everyone it comes across, and is about to kill them.
and here the Doctor comes in with "Starfleet doesn't kill lifeforms" and suggests making it tickling it to make it puke them out or something

it has killed thousands of people, letting it live goes against the "do no harm" more than letting it live

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Sisko said it best.

On Earth, there is no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window of Starfleet Headquarters and you see paradise. Well, it's easy to be a saint in paradise, but the Maquis do not live in paradise. Out there in the Demilitarized Zone, all the problems haven't been solved yet. Out there, there are no saints just people. Angry, scared, determined people who are going to do whatever it takes to survive, whether it meets with Federation approval or not!" Capt. Ben Sisko, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

If Roddenberry had lived even 5 years longer
DS9 would never have been made.

I find how they broke up to be hilarious, unintentionally so. It wasn't actually Kes who broke up with him but the mind of a dictator who took over her body. Yet after that episode they remained broken up for the rest of the season.
