Dark Souls series director Hidetaka Miyazaki cites Ico as the reason he got into games, and the overall mythology of the game and its successors as something he still seeks to match.
A number of high-profile game makers and artists from other industries spoke to Famitsu about Ico, the first game from its eponymous Team Ico, in celebration of its 20th anniversary earlier this year. Among the quoted were Miyazaki, whose comments were translated to English by VGC.
Miyazaki explained that he had spent some time away from video games after graduating college and starting a career outside of the industry. Then a friend recommended he try Ico, and Miyazaki proceeded to play through the game at this friend's house "quietly moved and silent" by "a beautiful, untold experience and story that I had never imagined."
And thats when I left the company I was working for at the time and started working for FromSoftware," Miyazaki explained. Im not exaggerating when I say it was the game that changed my life, and Im proud that it was Ico and it was [Ico director Fumito] Ueda's game.
Congratulations on the 20th anniversary of Ico, Mr. Ueda. As a fan, Im looking forward to your new games. The mythology that runs through your games, including Ico, has always been a goal of mine.

Great game (controls take a little getting used to though). Miyazaki ironically brought me back to gaming.

you mean rhetorically or the person in the OP?

if the latter, then Miyazaki, the guy behind the Soulsborne franchise.

if the former, then I played a few minutes of it.

I didn't think it was bad, from what I played, but it was at a time where I might drop a game if it didn't immediately grab my attention.

I didn't give it a fair chance, but I feel that I might if I were to try it now.

Ico was great and I was in awe of Shadow of the Colossus when I was a kid. Still am, honestly, that art style held up incredibly well even without the remake (remaster?).

Who made the From Soft games leading up to Souls? The one's on PS1 that had a lot of the hallmarks of Souls already.

Its so good it didnt capture your attention but in the off chance you try it again you think it might capture your interest.

What an awesome game.

I'm not sure, tbh.

I checked out Wiki, and it looks like the first game Miyazaki worked on was one of the Armored Cores in 2005.

but yea, it's possible that without him, there could have still been some version of the Souls games since like you said, a lot of the foundation was already there.

no, I'm saying I would have given it a fair chance, something that I didn't do initially.

I make no claims of how I would feel about its quality, since I didn't like SotC.

Not really all that surprising tbh. You can see and feel the Team Ico inspiration in the Dark Souls games.

Dark Souls already had an established blueprint on PS1 with Shadow Tower and King's Field. Established to a point where it seems like the graphics and gameplay are the only things with massive overhauls.

I guess I could see how Ico might of slipt in there first with more advanced world building.

Ico has been on my mind a lot lately, actually.

Like, from that DaS2 thread that was up recently. I think the Ico side of the experience has taken a huge hit on this side of the fanbase in terms of being forgotten or disrespected. I think you can see some of that happening here in this thread. We need to go back to being proud of game like Ico, ZoE2, Catherine, Journey, Limbo & Inside, Deracine, Portal, (etc), and get that anime spirit pumping again. The graphics, art design, story, and level of comfortability "doing nothing"/exploring are equally as important as combat. In fact, in games like Elder Scrolls, those things are very much MORE important than combat or multiplayer.......

Having the gameplay of a fighting game mixed with guerilla tactics , instant co-op , and realtime spontaneous seamless dynamic online interaction (Remnants, Transient Phantoms, Invasion, Messages, etc) with the build-crafting of a mech game mixed with old school RPG mechanics... Is pretty cool, especially with how that plays into the single player experience. But, it won't save gaming or anything. Sekrio + Deracine + MetalWolfChaos was the best release cycle FromSoftware has had since the DaS2 days. I'm super disappointed with most of you for dropping the ball as a following. Not sure we'll ever recover or see a clean break into a new Armored Core any time soon.

Different Miyazaki, but also interesting point.

Hayao Miyazaki seems like the kind of dude who would despise video games.

Other Miyazaki got George RR Martin to stamp his name on something & comb through the lore.

Hayao would not "hate video games"

That gameplay experience is very much alive today. Hell, people use "walking simulator" as a derogatory term for an entire genre of games that's about just walking around with light puzzles involved (personally I love them).

They're mostly found on PC, granted, but there's a host of indie developers that are creating experiences that are more about just exploring and experiencing a world than leveling up and getting better gear to murder NPCs with.
