I got the N64 for switch today. And while I hated paying 30 dollars to play it. It was really fun. I don't know if that was just my nostalgia google on. Or if it was just still fun. But I haven't been that happy with a game in while.

But I still don't like slippy.

Star Fox 64, despite being an N64 game from literal 1997, still holds up in both gameplay and graphics. Nintendo was putting out banger after banger in the N64 era. It's amazing how well those polished titles hold up when compared to other shit that came out in the same era.

when I got the N64 expansion, I di like 5 playthroughs of SF64 in a week. still a fantastic, endlessly repayable game.

I hate Nintendo's insistent need to do something completely new with the Star Fox brand. You notice every time a new Star Fox game that gets released has to have some form of gimmick? I think Assault was one of the few ones without a gimmick (other than the on-foot levels which were pretty bad). Like I get being innovative, but not all of the games have to be. Stick to what works and build around it.

I must have beaten it in every conceivable combination. For being such a simple concept, an auto-scrolling linear space shooter...it had a tremendous amount of depth in how each level could be completed. The number of possible routes was staggering to my young mind. I used to spend hours just trial-and-erroring certain levels just to see how to get to the alternate paths.

It was one of my most-played games as a kid. I know it like the back of my hand, or at least I did at the time. Haven't played it in years; I should do it sometime.

Apart from the N64 controller being a piece of junk after the gears wear out in the stick...You could give a kid today a copy of Star Fox 64 and they'll still think it's fucking awesome. It's basically timeless. Way less dated than most N64-era games. No silly gimmicks, just a really tightly-designed, content-rich game in which every level has something insanely unique or memorable about it.

Nintendo is pathologically obsessed with "innovation", but at the same time is weirdly selective about when they adhere to that philosophy.

Like, we can't a new F-Zero, but "New Super Mario" sequels are okay. >_>
