It was originally a Roman pagan celebration called Saturnalia, that was much loved in the empire for its festivities. When Christianity overtook worship of the Roman gods, the elites chose to simply turn Saturnalia into a holiday about their new god's birth. It made religious conversion easier. Personally I doubt Jesus ever even existed. But many scholars say he likely would have been born in the spring, not in the winter. Just going off the actual bible's own words
