Attaching a negative connotation to it is what might discourage others from doing it. When it's cool and harmless to steal, people steal more often. Peer pressure is a very real concept.

If people start to realize that stealing is wrong, and begin to talk about it as if it's wrong while looking down on people who do it, there's less enticement to steal. Or, at the very least, less overt encouragement to convince others to steal.
I think your hypothetical is a naive fantasy land if you think people won't do things just because they're told and or internalize that those things are immoral

There's still other factors that people weigh in their decision to pirate something, such as cost, ease of access, ability to mod/hack the software, and the fact that it's a very low risk crime.

Getting people to admit it's wrong changes nothing, so I'm not sure why it means so much to you that they do so, outside of just a conflict of ideology

Y'all really don't want to just admit that it's wrong to steal things, huh?

1. It's piracy, not stealing. It has a different name for a reason.
2. It's cute that you think I care that it's wrong.
This is exactly why social media was a mistake. People with this attitude get together and pat each other on the back.

At least tell me you don't go to r/antiwork

Lol I don't need a "justification" or to "defend" any of my actions. I pirate because I'm cheap and will always get something for free if I can. My switch library is great

it's wrong...

okay... so are antivaxxers and religious nuts, but we somehow allow that into actual legislation. piracy actually has done more for big companies by persuading japan to actually export their material to america. but we wouldn't want to admit that piracy actually ever did anything good.

3d printing a copy of something else should also be considered piracy. there are soooo many things that are actually being stolen, they are just not yet classified as stealing bc the right people haven't been lobbied new houses yet.

Which isn't what happens when you pirate. You didn't take anything. You used it without a license.

You took a copy without permission. The license is the permission. When you download a copy you purchased you're taking a copy with permission. The copy doesn't and never belongs to you, you just either have permission to take it or not.

It's an intangible object. You can't take it. If it was theft then pirates would be charged with theft. They're not though. Because it's a completely different thing.

Its easier to morally condemn the multimillion dollar corporations that exploit hundreds of thousands of labor hours to produce an overpriced good.

You can also just say it's the free market at work. "I think your product isn't worth anything more than the effort to take it for myself, so I am morally right in taking it."

People who admit they dgaf and just do it because no one can stop them are definitely on the high end of the IQ
Lmao no. You aren't brainy if you feel the need to justify your piracy to strangers, give it up. Letting everyone know how much you totally don't care, dude, counts as that btw.

Nothing is "taken". It's illegally copied. Copying is not taking.
You are coming into ownership of a product you didn't pay for. You are taking it.

If a TV "fell off the back of a truck" and you bring it home, then you took it.

I think its a fair argument to say since the publisher is no longer making the item available for retail purchase that a pirated version isnt stealing.

if the publisher cares about stealing and losing sales then perhaps meet demand and release the item in some format?

of course this is mainly pertaining to digital media.

I actually think some sites, like the biggest one we can't name, try to make sure all their content complies to copyright law. But it should be noted the only reason we have legal streaming websites of any kind was because companies were forced to compete with pirates.

If they're admitting they don't care and just do it, they're literally not justifying it by definition.

Justifying it would be trying to give a reason as to how it's beneficial or 'not that bad'
I was gonna respond but this pretty much sums it up

Probably pointless to do so anyway though, it was just a meme I thought was funny that set him off to begin with

If you're trying to tell me that you're just paying to "use" the software when you buy it, then fine, you're "using" the software without paying for the right to do so. You've still taken something without compensating the owner.

You haven't taken anything. You're using it without a license. Theft and piracy are both crimes, but they're not similar at all.
