US Patent Office records show Take-Two is behind filings to contest numerous names with connections to the words "rockstar", "social club", "mafia", "civilization" and more.

These include a Beijing company's trademark of the brand "Starrocks", the name of clothing brand Max Fayne, plus numerous restaurants, tattoo parlours and other small businesses who had used the word "rockstar" in their name.

"Think Like A Rockstar", a brand behind music books for live performances, abandoned its trademark after Take-Two's legal claim.

"Rockstar Axe Throwing", a Florida-based axe-throwing company, is meanwhile trying to oppose Take-Two's trademark grab.

Copyright/trademark law is so fucking stupid. You shouldn't be able to copyright/trademark a word you didn't actually invent

With a lot of these trademark things, they actually can't, but it is easier for them to file complaints than for a random person to fight them.

Or Post Malone/Nickelback for making songs called "Rockstar"?

Answer is probably not since I assume they all have the money to combat Take Two in court.

How can they file for trademark violation against a company that books live music performances? I've always understood trademarks to be irrelevant when we're not talking about competitors but rather someone in a completely different industry
It doesn't have to be legitimate to file for a violation. Like sure, if a lot of these were challenged, the various folks would be able to win, but that takes money.

I remember that Candy Crush Saga did this.
The company owning it, King, holds the trademark for the word "saga" in the field of software and video games, and they tried to trademark the word candy.
Luckily they dropped that idea after a dispute.

It really is stupid. These common words should not be able to get trademarked.

Remember when Delaware North lost their contract to run the concessions at Yosemite in 2015?
They claimed that the names of many historic sites within Yosemite actually belong to them, and not to the United States Government. The site names included Curry Village, Ahwahnee Lodge, Wawona Hotel, Half Dome, and the name of the park itself, Yosemite National Park.
It went to court, and the National Park Service had to pay $12 million to get them back.

IIRC this was heavily misrepresented and was an attempted at defending their shit against obvious mobile ripoffs. The Mobile game market is a hell of plagiarism and intellectual property theft.
